Films of the year ...

Post by Dave Watterson »

Everyone seems to spend the time between Christmas and Hogmanay reviewing
the past year. So ...

In no particular order here are ten of the amateur films from 2005 which
stick in my sleepy head tonight:

BETWEEN WALLS - gently comic love story from Argentina
MARCO P AND THE BICYCLE PRIGS - farcical, occasionally chilling drama from
Poland
OLDIE GARAGE - excellent Austrian documentary about an amazing character
who runs a repair shop for older cars ... and has no legs.
225 - England's Christopher David brought superb special fx to a child's
fantasy
THE SAFFRON ROBE - Scotland's Ken & Jean McRonald did a fascinating doco
on the monks of Thailand
PINSTRIPE - Scotland's Angus Allan brought a European style to a neat little
comedy.
THE STRANGE CASE OF THE DOCTOR'S JOURNAL - Mike & Pam Graham from SERIAC
brought an economical style and stylishness to the Jekyll and Hyde story.
THE MIDDLE WAY - France's Emmanuel DuBois's love story set against breath-taking
mountaineering scenes
SECOND TIME AROUND - Englishman, Malcolm Whiteley's sequel to ONE DAY AT
A TIME, about his continuing battle against cancer and a warm tribute to
his wife.
SNATCHER - London's Vincent Tempest's clever, moody little tale of robbery
on a train at night.

I've missed out many titles by our regular contributors to this forum - it
should not be too much of a mutual congratulations club. Besides many of
their films which reached wider notice in 2005 I actually saw in 2004.

What movies caught your attention last year?

I havn`t seen any of the films that have been entered into comps, (get the
hankies out!) but there is a new tv channel out on Sky called `Propellor
tv` and they show films that have been made by film students. Some of them
are quite good and give us a few ideas.

Our local television station is going onto Sky in and around March (Solent
TV), and they have asked our club to produce 27 minute programmes of our
stuff! I willbe editing it at my house! Sothings are looking good for us.We
did (as a club) do this about 3 years ago but only a handfull of people saw
the channel. Now the whole of europe could be watching it. I`ll let you all
know when and what channel number toview it.

So to you Dave and all my other friends on this forum, I would like to thank
you all for being knid to a new member and to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

So glad that you mentioned 'Snatcher' as it is made by Finchley's youngest
(and most talented member). I was mortified (and amazed) that this wonderful
little film was not even selected by Finchley's committee for inclusion in
their recent public show. When I opined that in my opinion 'Snatcher' was
the best film made by a club member for some years I was looked at with some
puzzlement!

Dave, what about the Daily Mail winner 'Passing By'? Maybe it is too well
known and you wanted to highlight other productions but I am glad you included
'The Middle Way' because quite apart from the wonderful photography of mountain
climbing, the treatment of the love story is the best I have seen from an
'amateur' and featured two wonderful actors.

Happy New Year to everyone,

Michael.

I first saw that wonderful film a couple of years ago at UNICA and was trying
to keep my list here to movies first seen in 2005. Of course if I were to
include all the films I really enjoyed during 2005 the list would be much,
much longer.

I was brought up to believe it unlucky to wish people "Happy New Year" in
advance - though at a pinch you could take the curse off the greeting by
saying "Happy New Year when it comes".

Now that it really is 2006 I can safely wish everyone on this forum (those
who write and those who only read) all the best for a happy, peaceful and
successful year. May you all continue to visit here often and those who have
yet to write ... note Ian's comments. We always welcome newcomers ... and
thanks to our own careless tryping we try to be knid to them.

Sincerely

Hi Ian,

If you contact Col Lamb - you can find him on the IAC members forum, he will
add you to the list of people receiving a loan of the 3 AMPS winners DVDs.
There is a very good representation from the UK as well as the USA, Australia,
NZ, Switzerland, Malta, etc. An opportunity to see what other film makers
are are doing, there is a total of about 5 hours of viewing!

Best wishes,

Ned C

Dear Ned,
Thanks. How do I find the IAC members forum. I can only find this one on
the IAC website.

Ian - the details you asked for have been sent to you privately.

I'm sure you will appreciate that we do not like to put people's email addresses
up here without their permission.

What commercial movies would be in your list of the best in 2005?

I liked `War of the Worlds`. The effects were excellent and also the storyline
was well altered a bit for the more modern era. I would love to see a film
made of jeff Waynes musical version. That would be great.
I saw `Hitch` at the Cinema. I also saw this from behind the projector as
well! I filmed a Documentry on our local cimema! It has three screens with
one projector room feeding all three. I lost alot of points because my Canon
MV630i has bad low light levels and produces quite alot of grain. A shame.

Thanks. I joined and have found it to be most complicated! It`s email based.
I thought that it would be like this forum.
Thanks anyway. I`ll stick with this one. It has a friendly atmosphere and
you seem to be able to picture the people as you read there replys. With
email, people all look alike to me.
