If that price of under $1500 is correct ... it is less than I paid for an SD projector a few years ago.
These sort of prices could make the difference. Darned few of us will spend $25k on a Sony TV but the RED price is nearer the mark.

John. thanks for posting the Red Shark news. It made interesting reasding, although a lot of it is above my head. However I did have a chuckle when the author wrote "EVERY ONE GOES TO THE PICTURES". I wondered what planet he lives on..

Elsewhere on the same web site

So 4k at home moves one step nearer

I do not know about you guys but it is about 5 years since I actually went to the Cinema, I hate the slurping, rustling, munching and general noise that a typical cinema audience produces, for me it totally spoils the movie (whatever it is)

Sooner or later we will be able to download a movie in either HD or 4k as soon as it is Premiered. Operating a bit like Sky's pay per view Box Office but immediate and not after the six month lag (or thereabouts)

The possibilities of the Red system are endless........small little used theatres could with possible help like the Lottery fund set up a cinema to boost their income. Even our movie clubs could possibly afford to set up mini 4k cinemas

If that happens even the old sceptic that I am may even move to a 4k camera

It's certainly true that most cinemas here in London are projecting digital pictures. I'm friendly with the tech guy for a cinema group and they are now on their second set of dig kit but I don't think that it's 4K, it is not considered essential. I must say that once a certain standard has been reached the improvements are marginal. I use one of the cinemas referred to as a test for my latest BD's and DVD's and the pictures look perfect to my eyes and I'm shooting 1920 X 1080i at 35 mbps on a Sony EX 1.

Nevertheless there are some amazing new formats in the pipeline and films will look very different I'm sure. How come you film makers don't go to the cinema? How on earth can you make films and not devour what the experts are doing? I'm very selective in what I go to see but I sure go regularly.

John

I think that you are reading the spec correctly I have just had a look at the GoPro website and it certainly lists the spec as 4k 15 and 2.7k 30 and 1440p 48 amonst standard HD very impressive

No doubt Tom H will get his hands on one a do his usual thorough test

We have our local Photographic outlet coming to our club next year, I'll ask them to bring one along

Michael
I love movies and watch them regularly on my 55" TV in the comfort of my lounge without all the distractions you get in the cinema. You do not have to see a movie filling a large screen to enjoy it

Michael.... to answer your question on.....How come you film makers don't go to the cinema? How on earth can you make films and not devour what the experts are doing?
well my answer to that is..there are no Experts..there are people who produce things that some like and many will dis-like..

you can only produce something you like to get total satisfaction ..... if we all liked the same thing we would be driving around in the same cars ..wearing the same clothes etc etc ....

Fair point both you chaps. Col, I pay a small monthly sub to Lovefilm. It's a great set up, you can specify almost any film that's ever been released, they send you a DVD (or BD if you choose). You can keep it for as long as you like to view (on your big plasma in the comfort of your living room). They won't send your next choice until they receive back the first one. So easy, the return envelope, all addressed and postage paid, is cleverly incorporated into the main envelope. I know they also provide the facility for you to download the file to view on a big screen but I prefer the actual disc.
