Club presentations

My last in-person club show was pre-covid, and as with all such visits there's a ton of preparation involved, a great load of equipment to take, miles to travel, and an expectant audience looking up at you. They're all thinking the same thing: entertain me. It's an off the cuff presentation that's i...

Re: Forum chat in FVM

I was sad to read Martin Evans' thoughts on FVM submissions where he says, 'I agree re all the reminiscence stuff. I yawn whenever I open another article email about super-bloody-8 mm. But I can only work with what I get'. Of course I'm as guilty as any, because I've often compared then and now, Sup...

Re: Vimeo degraded for UK and EU subscribers

It does indeed look to be a foot-shooting operation on Vimeo's part, and I can't for the life of me figure out the advantages that have sold Vimeo on the change. Mind you, I thought the same about Adobe, when they changed from a one-off fee to a subscription service. Who would stay with them? Well t...

Re: Where next for the IAC?

What a great chain this post has turned out to be. It could almost be copied verbatim and given 3 pages in FVM. In fact I wonder how many readers of FVM have read this forum post? I bet about 10 tops.

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

The colour system of film grading does indeed have its merits, but wasn't it superseded by the Star awards to enable our judges to have a greater range of categories in which to place a film? There's also the mythical contestant who flew in from a far off and distant land expecting to receive the br...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

John Simpson and Michael Slowe make good points about seeing films on the big screen at the cinema, but I've long made the observation that most of the modern multiplex presentations are awful. Far too many 'safety' exit lights on. Centre stairwell LEDs all reflecting in the screen. Projectors not f...

Re: 35mm slide scanners

I agree, the cheepie slide/neg scanners are so so, and best ignored. With a little care and a little light table a smartphone can do a pretty good job, as my Positive Image article on the subject pointed out. Alternatively I know a man who does this work to a very high standard, and funnily enough h...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

Strangely enough, being a BIAFF judge for many a year, I thought my 2015 film 'Susanna' wasn't really worthy of the 4*s it was given. I was pleased to get 4*s of course, but it did make me think there's room for a + and - system to be put in place. In other words your film can get 3*-, 3*, 3*+, 4*-,...

Re: FVM - Feb 23 Issue

I do hope the printers admit their fault, refund the IAC for their errors, and more importantly do some checks before they run off the next batch of FVMs. I know the images I supplied for Positive Image were all printed darker than they should've been.

Re: PANASONIC LUMIX GH 4

I'm tempted to ask why go to all the bother of using an anamorphic, Pq? OK, it does give a certain 'look' to images, especially those that contain point sources of light, but on the other hand it does introduce its own selection of compromises, some of which degrade the image technically. Why not si...

Sorry, I can't help. I have no personal experience of having 16mm film transfers done, and without that I can't recommend anyone.

Re: Filming with an iphone

To come back to your original question John, all the latest smartphones use a combination of optical image stabilisation (where the lens assembly vibrates 'out of phase' to counteract the camera person's vibrations), along with digital smoothing as a clean-up operation. This real-time processing doe...
