A very odd letter - and rather brave of Liz to publish it, when many an editor
would have binned it.

Of course much of FVM is reports and people talking about their experiences
... that's what life is about !! FVM's outstanding value is that it brings
our little community together. Only a couple of hundred people get to festivals
and events ... but everyone in IAC gets the magazine.

Most commercial mags can focus on one or two aspects of a subject, but FVM
has to be both a house-journal recording events of importance to IAC and
a means of provoking, teasing, applauding ... interacting with other members.

I am sorry that Liz is leaving because she is fed up. I hope that her publication
'Marine World' continues to thrive. I hear whispers there may be another
magazine from her stable on the way too. She has done so much to brighten
up our FVM magazine, improved its production quality amazingly - and brought
on new contributors.

She has often said that she lacks design skills and makes no attempt to edit
in the sense of changing wording. But her determination has kept it on schedule
through thick and thin.

I hope that whoever is found to replace her can keep up her standards and
bring her/his own style to it as well.

By the way: which bit of FVM do you read first when it arrives? I confess
to being a letters page addict.

magazine. I did actually offer myself at one stage -- but it seems someone
else got there first

Well that might fall foul of the proposed legislation on media control ...
if the same chap has power over the website and the magazine !!!

I am assuming that the Richard Palmer here is the boss of Merula Limited
which hosts the IAC website ... and is a member of Channel 7 moviemaking
group. Where he would find the time to tackle a magazine as well I cannot
imagine !

The IAC Council may have someone else in mind - part of the duties of the
officers is to have contingency plans ready.

P.S. It seems to me that a nice thing to do would be for as many of us as
possible to prepare articles on whatever topic/s we feel competent to tackle
and to offer them to the new editor whenever s/he is appointed. I hope that
all the current FVM writers will continue but there may be some drop-outs.
(Most editors have some contributors who only write because the editor knows
how to twist their arms the right way.)

I would be only too happy to write the odd piece for the magazine as I did
for Movie Maker all those many years ago!

When I offered Liz was not at all keen and said that they had a surplus of
material anyway so I crept off stage!

It is a great mag. and essential in keeping the IAC together.

I thought I`d put my two-pennyworth into this discussion. I don`t know this
Geoffrey Petts chap. Who is he? As he mentions that he is retired, I assume
that he is elderly. How did he get to a ripe old age with that attitude without
connecting a vaccuum cleaner hose to his car exhaust? Perhaps he doesn`t
have a car, for he possibly thinks that there is nowhere to go that`s any
better than anywhere else. What a thoroughly miserable ***(person) he must
be. I think Liz has done a brilliant job with FVM and it`s sad to see her
go. On the grapevine, I have heard whispers that someone MAY have been found
to take over, but I wasn`t given their name.
As one of the regular contributors to FVM, I certainly don`t want to give
up; unless of course, the new editor has new ideas and new writers in mind.

Dave asks what we read first. Yes, I like the letters page, but there aren`t
enough of them. I also read my own page to check for mistakes and omissions.
Altogether, it`s much better than "Camcorder Buyer" (...sorry, USER) magazine.
