Altho' not the least interested in last night's Eurovision song contest, I
understand that we came last without scoring any points at all! Some, this
morning are suggesting that this was more a reflection on our taking part
in the Iraq war rather than in a lousy submission.

If this is so, I'm sure that the Euro judges of amateur films this year will
not let this war interfere with their judgements on GB films, else we will
be out on our ear 'oles!
It will be interesting to see how UNICA rates the GB entries.
France and Germany were VERY anti war as you know.

I did not watch the song contest last night so i may be way out of date...
From the few ones i saw a couple of years ago, the songs submitted were really
not good. I don't know who picked the songs to enter. There are lots of music
talents in UK. The business they generate reflect that.

Is it an art/commerce divide thing?

France and Germany were VERY anti war as you know.

I am told that during the Falklands war British and Argentinian delegates
sat next to each other at UNICA.

I detect a little nationalism among the audience in supporting their own
country's work - but have not detected any other bias against other countries.
(Mind you some nations are "expected" to produce heavy, serious pieces a
lot; just as the Brits are "expected" to produce some zany humour.)

In the years I have attended the jury members have been admirably impartial
on nationality. Sometimes you can detect that a particular jury member has
a bias towards certain aspects of the movies - e.g. they concentrate a lot
on the lighting used.

As the only Brits going to UNICA in the 80's there were no Brits there in
1982 during the Falklands war, but the Argentina guy and I sat next to each
other in 1983 at Ste Nazaire. He was a thoroughly charming guy, as have been
the others who have attended. Like me, he preferred to see our relatively
minor differences worked out on the football field! Remember, the 1982 Cup
Final was won by Argentine Ricky Villa's stunning goal, during the war! Winners
Spurs were captained by Ossie Ardiles at the time, too. Remember his wonderful
rendition of the name of the team? " Tottingham Hosspurs"

UNICA jury and UNICA itself was extraordfinary in those days, being the only
place where South Africa and Russia sat side by side, East and West Germany
too, and the Yanks were even there as well! So I'm confident the jury will
hopefully be as straight as it has always been in the 20 years my missus
and I have been going!


Re the Nul Points score by the Brits, Terry Wogan on Radio Two's Steve Wright
in the Afternoon prog on Friday anticipated this when he forecast correc
tly thatnobody would vote for the UK. He thought Ireland might do well, "after
all we didn't invade anybody," washis spin on that one. Mind you the way
the Scousers sang the song (flat, off-key) it's a miracle they scored as
highly as they did!
