Cinemas are getting better ... try Showcase Deluxe if you have one in reach. The showmanship of curtains and house-lights going up and down has gone the way of the old cinema organ ... and unless the deafness of old age has struck you, it might be wise to bring ear-plugs to cut the impact of the volume a bit. But seats are getting better again, screen image is usually superb and sound a LOT better than many older 35mm cinemas used to offer.

If you can go on a weekday afternoon and be an oldie the price is not too horrendous.

Whether you want overpriced popcorn and sweets is up to you.

Thanks for this wonderful compilation Desmond. I also remember the days of the "full supporting programme" in the 1960's when you could usually see a couple of films, newsreel, trailers and, if you were lucky, a cartoon. These days may have gone in the commercial cinema but they live on among the film collecting fraternity, many of whom put on this type of show in their home cinemas. Last month I attended the northern film collectors convention in Blackpool which was very well supported and although most of us now use digital projection, and collect primarily on DVD and Blu ray, there is still a lot of interest in Super 8 and 16mm with plenty of second hand projectors for sale.

How many times have we been reminded from other members not to troll into the past. Look at the future. At times the past was better value for money.
I started as a projectionist with the ABC Cinema.
First.... Pathe News.
Second... Main Film.
Third.......B.Films.
Fourth.....Pearl and Dean Adverts.
Then back to News and main Film and THE QUEEN.
Yes those were the days and Thank You for the nostalgic reminder.

Without wishing to stir things up again, I don't think anyone has suggested that discussing or even singing the praises of "proper" film is a bad thing and shouldn't be encouraged. It is the reluctance among some quarters to accept emerging technologies and styles which is the cause for concern - especially when the "argument" against such technologies and styles appears to be not an argument at all, but the statement "It's not like when we had to splice and cement real film".

Surely it's the end result that counts. And many paths may lead there.
