DESKTOP ICONS NUISANCE PROBLEM

This may not be the right forum for this subject, but as it delays editing it might be accepted.
One of my hard drives is partitioned into two. I use one half and my partner the other. For years we have been able to switch from one to the other with no problem, but now we find that on switching the Desktop icons move from the positions we have placed them. This is despite making sure that Auto Arrange is unticked and no other box is ticked except "show desktop icons" and "align to grid".
I have recently found two free programmes that on a click of the mouse restores the icons to the position they were in before they moved. On my half of the harddrive I place all the icons, and there are very many, to do with video editing onto one side of the screen and all others on the other side. Before finding the restore programmes it took a long time to find the icons I wanted to use and of course every time I re-arranged them, on switching they moved again and were all mixed up with the non editing programmes. This movement only happens when switching users. It doesn't happen when I first Boot up to one or the other halves of the hard drive.
What I want is for someone to explain what has caused the problem so that I can rectify it. I suspect the graphics card but nobody can confirm this as yet. Any Info will be appreciated
