I recall the "old days" of the magazine Moviemaker, and the now "almost forgotten" super 8mm cine cameras & projectors. I obviously look back with fondness but, even though I still have a sell & Howell super 8 sound projector & a cannon cine camera, Its nothing but a "relic to be cherished" don’t get me wrong, I am aware there are people still using film, In fact, I myself was able to purchase a cartridge of super 8mm film not so many months ago. Never did use it though. I use Pinnacle studio ultimate for editing
My efforts and I am still learning “Hello Mike, a member who has helped me on here with using the studio software” I suppose , I am here with this posting to introduce myself to the forum members and perhaps ask, what real benefits will I “as a lone video//film maker” be able to get from joining the I.A.C ? i.e., the copyright license, can I literally use any music at tall or are there certain limitations? In addition, living here in Liverpool, are there clubs local to me? Competitions etc. Anyway, great forum and, I look forward to learning as much as possible from here.

Welcome! (Back!)

Yes, the music licence is an extremely valuable asset for IAC members (it costs a bit more to get it - about £8 I think) - and as far as I am aware, it covers you for any music in any of your films shown to club audiences (and probably 'free' public' shows?). But I don't think it covers you for any film you might want to sell !

There are a host of other benefits to being an IAC member though. For example, flashing the IAC membership card can more often than not pave the way to being able to shoot somewhere, otherwise regarded as a 'not 'ere you don't mate' place. The magazine (free to members) is an invaluable source of tips and advice - as well as news of forthcoming events of course. Additionally I believe most regions have their own regional magazine - worth the membership money on their own. Anyone can enter IAC competitions - but you'll find, generally speaking, it's cheaper to do so for IAC members. (Not that that would be a reason to join!)

As a member of the IAC, you will never be 'alone': I am sure there are active clubs in your area - check the IAC website for Clubs in the North East - as film-makers we like our films to be shown to as many people as possible: clubs provide that arena. Of course you can come here and request advice - and get it, IAC member or not, you can join a club without being an IAC member, you can enter competitions without being an IAC member, which could well have you asking 'so why join?'.

Cameraderie. Being a real part of the video making community. Magazines. Music licences. All those things and more. But in the end, the membership card is probably one of the most valuable pieces of kit a film maker can have for a host of individual reasons.
