I can't speak for Vista, but in XP, using a PC with two connected monitors -
Right click on the screen
Select 'Properties' from the menu
Select the Settings tab at the top of the box that opens
Across the middle of the display you'll see a box headed 'Display' - with a drop down arrow on theright side. Click that drop down arrow and you'll see the names of the two monitors, marked '1' and '2'. Select one of the monitors - and click on 'Identify' to show you which one you have selected.
Now you can select which is the primary (left) display. By selecting the 'other' monitor, you can tick the box 'extend my windows desktop onto this monitor.
The display will now use both monitors as if it they were just one display.
I use this set-up for video editing - the editor I use allows for dual displays and will put, for example, all timelines on one monitor, and assets & viewers on the other. Or any of 6 other display arrangements. Couldn't worki without dual monitors now!
