I see the IAC have put up the entry fees for the competition again - this
time a massive 16%! They must think we are made of money, £18 seems to
me
to be rather excessive, other competitions dont charge nearly as much.
It IS a big charge, but £18 is only if you are not an IAC member and the
entry is more than 30 minutes long. Otherwise it starts at £14 for your
first
entry. (A 30 minute film = 47p a minute.)It drops to £12 for each subsequent
entry. Still high but not so outrageous. Don't forget that under-25s pay
£10 and under 18s pay £7.
The Cotswold charges amateurs £9.50 if you want your entry returned in UK
and it must be less than 16 minutes long. (a 16 minute movie = 59p a minute.)
If you enter in their open class to get a film of up to 22 minutes accepted
it costs £13.50 if you want your entry returned in UK.
The Guernsey Lily charged £10 plus return postage last year for movies up
to 30 minutes long. (a 30 minute movie = 35p a minute.)
If you are a UK amateur, an IAC member and enter a film of a typical 11
minutes
length (which you want to have sent back) in each of the three international
competitions it costs you:
IAC - £14.00
Cotswold - £ 9.50
Guernsey Lily - £10.50

I know who I will be supporting in future. Am I alone in this?
JOB`s and KV`s comments re high IAC copmpetition prices are correct. Dave
Wattersons attempt at breaking the costs down re running time per minute
is missing the point. I entered the 2006 BIAFF show with one entry and overall
it cost me nearly £60 (sixty pounds)for the privilege. Why?
I`ll break it down for you.
An important consideration for amateur film-makers is the copyright issue,
so in order to do things right one needs to cover oneself legally. As far
as I know the IAC is the only place in the country where you can get the
necessary licences (three of them all told). For arguments sake all three
cost about £9.00. The only snag is that if you are not a member of the IAC
you can`t get all three, only one - the MCPS one -
So if you want all three you have to join up, so to that £9.00 you can now
add at least £36.00 for IAC membership for a year (the benefits of which
are very negligible anyway), add to that the entry cost of the film come
showtime, which in my case ran to over 30 mins so that meant another £14.00!
So there is the best part of £60.00 gone straight off the bat, and I did`nt
even go to the BIAFF 2006 show. If I did the cost would have been higher,
what with travelling expenses and so forth. (I believe the IAC also wanted
£11.00 per person to gain admission for the gala show)
Sixty pounds. Now that was a lot of money just to enter one show, especially
to someone who is unemployed like myself.
And now I learn the prices have gone up again for 2007!
