Dear All,
The new FVM mag is pretty good this month but I thought the article by W.A.Dunn
on Travels with my Cine Camera was a bit of an ego trip!
At the moment, I seem to be in a complaining mode at the mo with my 3 teenage
kids giving me greif! So bare with me.
Even Mr Dunn is brave enougth to post an article in this months mag. There
doesn`t seem to be much on the Cine Camera! It`s seems to be mostly about
what fantastic places he`s been on holiday! As a film-maker, I do not need
to know where this man has been. I see enougth of it when our club has a
holiday competition. Normally it`s Thialand or New Zealand. Mine would be
about Butlins! (for those British who know what that is!) The only decent
bit was about useing a cassette recorder to capture local sound. `HELLO!`
My camera does that. Even my Phone!!!

The article called `Airport Agonies` was excellent. This was about a `Real`
cameraman who went to India for the BBC and his troubles getting his gear
into the country. This is what`s it all about. Pratical Stuff. Real Life
Problems! Not some old bloke who is too tight to spend £199 at Dixons on
a new state of the art Digital Camcorder! Sorry Mr Dunn. This may have been
ok in 1923. But in 2006, most of us have moved onto more easier things.

Hi ian, I haven't seen FVM this month yet (it has to wing its way across
the pond) but spare a thought for the editor who has to fill the mag and
would certainly welcome an article from you about your practical experiences
filming and the problems you have overcome. Write your story, I am sure many
of us will be happy to read about your film making, also just one useful
idea from an article makes it worth while. Are Butlins still in business?
I remember them well, the red coats and the chalets! Small consolation now
but teenagers do grow up and usually turn out fine its just getting there
that's a bit of a trial,

Hello Ned,
I know the Editor has to fill the mag and this article would have been one
of the few that he would have received. It is hard being an editor because
hardly anybody submits anything! So my blame would be on Mr Dunn. No-one
needs to know all this info about where he went on his holidays. When you
read it your see. I think he is an `I` person. An `I` person is someone who
basicly puts the word I in almost every sentence. If you overheard a conversation
with a person like this, then you would here a sort of slagging match! I`ve
done this. My camera is bigger then yours. When `I` was ill, my illness was
worse then yours. You`ve herd the song `I can do anything better then you`.
Well that`s it. It may be because I tend to do more for people then most
like hold the door open for old ladies. Always helping mostly for free because
when you don`t have much money you tend not to care about money! The more
money you have, the more it govens your life. The HAVE and HAVE NOTS!

I went to see someone about joining their film-making for a new channel
that`s starting on Sky. It`s not Solent Television. That`s another story
being developed. This new channel hopes to start in July. Well I went to
see him at his house and went along this road. At the very end was this big
house with a nice Merc on the drive. He invited me into the very big Lounge
and I was confronted with the biggest Plasma Screen I have ever seen in someones
house. To cut along story short. Ian, he said. You won`t get paid to help
us! Yes I thought. Just my luck. Helping people for nothing. It is a good
project butit`s hard to help someone when they have all this stuff. You see.
Filming is in my heart and I want to make a caree out of it. Now is the right
time as the kids are now grown up. The wife is sorting out her job as a Nurse,
traing at Uni. All I want in life is to buy my own house and not live in
a council one! If I want this dream, then i`ve got to work for it doing something
I really want to. I`ve been a doorstep for too long!
So the outcome of this job may be excellent. It has took him 15 years to
fullfill. I may do a few freebies with this man. Were have to see. I`ll ask
him soon because I don`t mind making and helping someone fullfill there dreams,
but I would only do this if it got me closer to mine!
Another thing, he showed me promotional film that was done for an old venture
of his and it was proper tv quality. It was done on a top of the range Avid
system. It made my `Best of Ian`s films 2004` look really crap! So i`m a
bit down on that one as well!

Keep it up Ned, and make those films. It IS fun. I still enjoy it.

Hi Ian, Some thoughts for you. Make films and enter them in as many Festivals
as possible and read and learn from the judge's comments. Watch as many amateur
films as possible as well as professional films and study what they did and
how they did it. It's nice to have an Avid program for editing but for most
of us we can achieve all we need with a very simple system. Its the editor
not the system that makes the film. Working for free is worth it provided
you LEARN something and it doesn't last too long. Make LOTS of films and
get friends and fellow film makers to comment honestly, you will need a thick
skin but its the best learining process there is. By the way, I see many
IAC members were stuck with a poatal surcharge on their mags and I fear mine
won't even make it to the plane! Make more movies!!

Thanks forthe constructive comments.They will help many people on this forum.
I use Premiere Pro 1.5. I love it. I`ve tried others in the past, but I couldn`t
even do basic functions on them! Prem is great. I`m learning from it every
time I use it. The last two (I`ve only entered 2!) editting competitions
that I did at my club, I came first in. I just love filming and editting.
I do watch as many films as I can. It`s only lack of funds and human hands
is the limiting factor. You cannot do a panning shot with a slow zoom while
following the actor when you are the actor as well!!!! So alot of my films
have still preset shot with me acting. I have ideas on a few films and `pop
videos` but for me to do alone would be inpossible. Dave said about using
local actors. This may be a possibility one day. But I`ve done my short term
`freebies`. This guy wanted a more permanent person (Like fulltime) to do
it for nothing! Now I know how he got well off! I`m not going to be suckered.


I will make more movies. If you don`t get your mag then I could stick mine
in a bag and bring it to you on `THAT PLANE`. Easy Jet is quite cheap at
the moment. You couldpay for this and we couldmake an Anglo/European one!

your edit system is the equal of many pro systems. While building up your
contacts write some scripts and visualise how you would make them into films.
You can make story boards of the scripts - no I can't draw but stick figures
will do and it will give you ideas for camera positions and angles. I'm afraid
EasyJet don't fly to here, I live in the American west (cowboy country/mountains)
so just hope my mag makes it by the usual way. Once you have a camera/edit
system then tape is cheap. Make a five minute movie every month!! Good luck

Hello Ned,

Since my last responce, I clicked on your website and found that you were
`across the pond`. `Brothers in Arms` as they say. I thought you were near
Willy! I`ve got to plug British Airways (BA for short). They do cheap flights.
Are you sure you still don`t want my copy!? An Anglo/American project sounds
good to me.
I do do a sort of story boards. When I have time. I have a folder with all
our club competitions in. I have a few pages for each. I get ideas at work
or riding my motorbike even endless hours of sleepless nights thinking! I
take bits of paper to work and jot down ideas. I nick a few ideas for sitcoms.
The last one I did was based on a bit of Dads Army which I twisted and altered
a bit. It won the `Open Competition`. As for proper storyboards. My drawings
are like a 2 year olds. A face would be a circle with 2 dots for eyes, a
straight line for the nose and a half circle for the smilling mouth.

What editing Programme do you use Ned?

Has your club got a yearly DVD they would be willing to swop for one of our
club DVD`s? If so a Private email would take up less space and not bore the
good fellows on here!
