Dear all,
I have just joined the IAC! (Big cheers and hurrahs all around!). I`ve also
applied for the three licencess that I need.
I want to enter a couple of entries into the IAC`s comp in March, to be in
by Jan 2006. All questions relate to this comp.
Just a couple of questions........

In club comps etc, I call myself `Digital Dreams` with a spinning logo that
I end it with. I also start it with a sill version. I don`t own a company
called this. I just use it as a kind of sig. There are others in the club
who do this. Can I use this logo titles to start and end my films?

Our titles also include what music we`ve used. Can we include this?
I`ve heard that this is a big no no?

If I enter them into any international comps. Can I add `music by` titles?

Do i enter them into a catogory or can I just enter them? I would not know
if my acting was any good, or the editing comp would be better? So what i`m
saying is are all the films lobbed into the comp and the judges decide what
the film deservess?

Any other advice would be well received as this is my first time and i don`t
really know whats exspected!
I am known for keeping to the rules but bending them slightly! And also for
not sticking to the old fashioned rules of filmmaking.

Ian, there are no categories as far as I know in the IAC comp so just enter.
It would be far better if you do not credit any music unless it has been
specially written and recorded for that production. There would be no problem
with you including your spinning logo provided that is not copyrighted by
anyone else. Looking forward to seeing your film at Bedford!

Thankyou Michael,
The only things in my films that are copyrighted is snippits of music. I`m
getting the licence to cover this. I`m looking forward to show my films!

Glad you decided to join IAC Ian. Among the bumf you will get should be
a yellow leaflet on music copyright - it has also just gone out to all existing
members with the latest copy of the magazine. That sets out the rules.

But to answer your questions:

1) Yes use your logo if you like. (Ask yourself if it fits the mood of the
film you are entering or not. Judges are influenced by everything you show
on screen. I've seen your logo and it is not too fussy, but some people have
great fanfares and taradiddles as if they were a major Hollywood or Bollywood
studio. If their movie isn't up to much a grandiose start just emphasises
its failings.)

2) UK music copyright rules say you must NOT list the recorded music used.
If you have specially composed music you can list that. (Oddly the Australian
rule is exactly opposite - they must list recorded music used!)

3) I would not list the music for international comps. The comps usually
don't care, but you are still operating under the British agreements and
their rules should prevail.

4) For BIAFF there are no categories except age ... and you ain't under 18
or even under 25 ... so you join the great mass of entrants.

The BIAFF arrangement is:

a) every entry is screened in its entirety before three judges. There's a
complex system of switching judges around which is described in a literary
masterpiece "wot I wrote" ... see the main website www.fvi.org.uk/central/biaff_2005_judging.html.
The judges write a critique for every entry.

b) every entry is categorised on a colour code: blue = beginner, bronze =
promising, silver = technically excellent and gold = wow! (Watch your coding
go up as you get better each year!)

c) the gold movies are sent on to a separate panel of judges who sort out
the prizes.

The full rules and entry forms are on the main website for download.

Just one more thing ... given your rate of production through the year you
better keep an eye out for the deadlines of the other two big UK / International
festivals the Cotswold (15th May) and the Guernsey Lily (usually end of May).


But you should also consider the various regional festivals. Your club has
opted to be part of SERIAC (South East Region) so you are just too late for
this year's SERIAC competition ... but do try to get over to the mainland
to visit the festival screenings on 27th November at Cranleigh Arts Centre.
You could also take part in the SOCO (Southern Counties region) comps - no
details of any at the moment.

And don't dare to miss the Frome Five Minute Festival - a very popular competition.
Closing date is 6th February. Details on their website www.philmar.demon.co.uk

I thought that I would try it out and see what happens! I have received my
FVM (Sept/Oct) edition with the SoCo News.

My favorite Film logo is 20th Cent Fox. They have started to do different
versions and colours of this logo in there films. In `The Day After Tomorrow`,
they coloured it grey. Very atmosperic.

It is a shame not to give credit when it`s due. If someone used my music,
I would be honoured! but if they did a rubbish mix then I would not be happy.

Thats ok. I just saw on the Entry Form that there were boxes to tick for
Comedy, Thriller etc. I`ll tick the box nearest to what I think the film
is about. Some of them are a mix. I`ll tick two!

I`ll look out for other comps. It`s a real pleasure and a warm feeling when
one can show the films that they have made to people. It`s good to get criticism.
It can only better the filmmaker and this profession.

I have altered my logo`s abit. It`s a learning process. You don`t know what
they look like properly untill you see them on the clubs big projector! I
sometimes cringe and think YUK!!!!!
I`ll send you another disc of my stuff next year when our club Comps finish
