Super 8 Weddings

Post by Ken Wilson »

Trawling through the vast expanses of the Internet, I found someone advertising
shooting weddings on Super 8. Amazed, I read on. It turns out that you get
a film of between 10 and 30 minutes in length. The film is in reality, silent,
due to the Super 8 stock being "silent", but music is added to it after the
film is returned from processing. It is pointed out that this involves approximately
a 3 week delay to allow for the labs to do their stuff.(Risk of lost reels
in the post is not mentioned.)

The "selling" point is that you are getting a realistic vintage look like
only cine film can give. And the price for this? A cool £800! Extra, if you
require video inserts of the actual service.
It seems to me that this was the kind of film people made in the 1960s when
there was no alternative...and for free! Is this crazy of is it me? (Don`t
answer that!)

So anyone out there want me to film their wedding from 24 super 8mm angles
with 7 being filmed in CinemaScope and including 2 with pulse sync digital
sound master. Why not enquire about our option on shooting from 4 angles
on Fuji Single 8. Looking for that 1930s classic film, we can also offer
a genuine clockwork hand-held 9.5mm camera. But if you want to look your
best on the day CFT can provide 3- yes THREE 16mm cameras to film your happy
day in standard Wide/Screen or full CinemaScope.
For those decerning parties with a few extra bob in their pocket we can
, lastly but by no means least, capture the happy occassion on 35mm again
in CinemaScope if you wish.
Why not premierre your wedding film on the big screen from genuine projected
super 8mm, 9.5mm, 16mm and 35mm movie film or video projection to our new
big screen- (coming soon) Our projectors include the mighty Elmo GS1200 and
Kalee 12 systems- still regarded as one of the best 35mm projection systems
ever built, famed for their rock steady projection.
If I weren't so busy being an amateur film maker perhaps I could earn a
few quid on the side!!!!!

That seems incredibly cheap to me Ken. To produce a 30 minute Super-8 film
of a reality event you've got to shoot an absolute minimum of 90 minutes.
You've got to shoot nearly 30 cartridges of film, even assuming a filming
speed of 18 fps. There's 360 quid of the £800 gone already, and nobody's
paid for your day's shoot, your editing tapes, postage and hours in front
of the editor viewer. You've also got to keep buying second hand kit to
keep your business moving. Sounds too cheap to me.

If they mean they simply set up the camera on a tripod and do nothing but
the church service then there are going to be some nasty gaps where they
were changing film. OK, they don't have sound to worry about, but that's
probably the least of their buisness worries.

Hi Tom. I think that you are viewing this in a far too professional way.
The impression that I got (righty or wrongly) was that the service was not
shot AT ALL within the £800. If the customer required the service, it was
an add-on-extra which would be shot on video at an extra charge.
The whole thing is transferred after processing on to video anyway for digital
editing during which there is the addition of a music soundtrack. I think
that your estimate of a 3 to 1 shooting ratio is probably over estimated
too. I agree that this would be the proper way to go about it (should you
wish to use Super 8 at all)but I`ll bet the 30 minutes of film is using almost
all footage shot! I read their promotional info as though it was "an impression"
of the wedding day rather than a true wedding film/ video.
So like my (very) old Super 8 holiday films, perhaps it is "topped and tailed"
and a few minor cuts made to tidy it up. Then again, we can`t be sure.
Basically, I think it is a silly idea.
