IAC DISCUSSION FORUMS

Tom h tells me that some of you here aren't contributing to the nle and general
discussions groups, and it seems a shame that your views (on display here)
aren't getting the widest possible airing. I've just joined these two groups
this morning by following the very clear instructions given on page 6 of
the latest edition of FVM, and it works!

Laurie, I am puzzled since I thought that the other forums were no longer
operative and that we were the main voices.
Why does it say in one of the dialogue boxes on the way to this site that
there is only 1 discussion group? I will have another look at FVM because
last time it was very confusing. Anyhow we have great fun on this one and
it is a very select band even though an old man like you is welcomed by the
other old men (don't say a word to Mr Angry Young Thurso Man!

Laurie was refering to the private discussion email groups... they are available
to IAC members only and messages come to your mailbox automatically, rather
than through a website.

Why private? Doesn't IAC want to get more people in?

Cheap Jibes R Us !

We all like to tease a bit from time to time. The catch with
text communications is you cannot see or hear the smile behind
the words. That is why emoticons were invented

But I have to say I don't like the things!

The private email groups clog up mailboxes as everything you
send goes to all the group. This system keeps the messages
neatly together, organised into themes and you choose what or
who you want to read.

I believe IAC should be as open and public as possible. We ARE
a friendly bunch but can seem off-putting. I believe it is also
a requirement for IAC to reach out to the public since it is a
Registered Charity and as such must do what its Articles of
Association say is its prime purpose:

"To promote the advancement and improvement of
general education in relation to all aspects of
cinematography and associated audio and visual
arts and the development of public appreciation
of such arts."

I reckon that means it has to work with the public ... that's why
it gets a share of our taxes from the members who pay with Gift
Aid.

When the email groups went private I left them and after prolonged
discussion with IAC officers managed to get two parallel discussion
forums (?fora) going on the website: NLE and General. The NLE one
quickly fell into disuse. Questions about specific systems seemed
better suited to private emails ... and besides, one of the great
gurus refused to share his expertise with non-IAC members.

So when Atta had had time to settle in as the new webmaster he
killed off the NLE public forum and left us with this one.

Phew - is that enough back story?

Laurie, glad you found us and hope that you will pop in to express
your views from time to time. Not many write here but a good number
of folk at home and abroad read it. It's a great place to discuss
broad issues of the movement rather than technical details ...

I have experienced the wrong attitude with respect to similar articles within

the arts company of Caithness Arts. As a director and membership secretary
I am keen to get people on board from ALL artistic interests not just the
'posh' high fallutin interests that the word "arts" suggests. As part of
this I'm currently organising another showcase event where we get a variety
of interests to perform or display samples of their interest. I was recently
questioned as to whether we should be running such events. This was followed
by a volley from fellow collegues who made quick to remind the one that our
articles states quite clearly that we are here to "promote the arts within
Caithness". The one was silenced and we are going ahead with the event.
As part of the events I make the effort to promote film making and within
that field I stress the importance of all other art forms of which visual
arts has need and I also give mention to the IAC and other film related bodies.
As part of CFTs' own objectives there is a specific focus on promoting movie-going,
cinema development and local involvement in amateur, semi or pro film production
which is difficult in the face of a local dramatics group bad-mouthing our
motives. That aside promotion to garner increased interest and involvement
is essential and it is important to be as open about our work as possible.

Not patronising, cheap jibe maybe. Because as Dave put it we try and be a
bit different (irreverant?). Tell you what, if you are at the Harrogate Festival
next month look me up, (no one knows your real name do they?), and I will
buy you a large drink, that goes for any and all of our regular friends on
this forum.

By the way, CfT, I wonder if you know the websites I run
for film societies (film appreciation groups)

In the absence of the official one from BFFS this tries to
keep people up to date. I'd love to carry info about your
events. (Contact email address on the website.)

I risk putting this message on the forum because I suspect
many contributors are interested in seeing good movies as
well as making them. You might find a film society near
you. I have not got them all on my website, but as many
as I can find.

Maybe you can even let me know of some I have missed.

I had a look at the film societies thingy Dave and both the Scottish ones
are 300 miles in two different directions on far distant islands where there
are no cinemas but not to worry as I have been considering a film club for
some time aimed at viewing as well as making films. There is a local politics
problem in that field but strong cultural support is coming from a department
of the Highland Council and all I need to do is find people interested in
being on a committee. Seems easy that bit and it would be if it was flower
arranging or the like. Strangely no-one seems to have time to sit on a film
society. That aside efforts are going to be made but local apathy may win
the day.

Nice one Micheal, I am working like the clappers to get fit enough to to
take you up on that, our Rita is realy chuffed as I am just pushing that
bit harder.

Great news that Malcolm, the Marmite Kid, may be able
to join us all in Harrogate for the BIAFF. There
should be plenty of great movies to enjoy as well as
good company.

When you are at a festival do you just watch your movie
with an audience and then scarper ... or do you avoid
your work and go see everyone else's?
