Public Liability Insurance

Post by Bob Vine »

I would like some advice please !

I am about to embark on my first video production which has a public car
park as its core location. The Council have agreed in principle to me filming
at the location but have enquired about my Public Liability Insurance status.

I am a member of the Orpington Video and Film Makers, affiliated to The IAC
and I am to join the IAC this month. Does the IAC have PLI that covers its
members shoots or do I take out a policy personally ? Does anyone have any
recommendations or know of where I can get cover for film shoots ? What do
other people do ?

Look forward to hearing from anyone !

No one seems to be answering Bob Vine's question.

As a member of Orpington, Bob, you can ask one of the IAC's Vice-Presidents
when Reg Lancaster returns from judging duties in Scotland.

I suspect the answer is no.

The IAC has a scheme where affiliated clubs can get Public Liability cover
for their club meetings - in case someone trips over a cable, for example.
I don't think it extends to shoots by club members.

Obviously your local Council is playing safe but is treating you as though
you were a large film company. Do a bit of phoning round insurance agents
for advice. It is probably one of those things where you get a cover for
theoretical millions for a minimum fee. Unfortunately the minimum fee may
be 25 pounds or more.

You can dig round on the internet and get quotes - try typing "Public Liability
Insurance" +UK in Google. The catch is that they seem to be set up for businesses
rather than one-off use like this. There must be way of getting such cover
- e.g. when you have a wedding in a marquee. Maybe the secret is to enquire
about PLI for an event.

Good luck

I am also involved with the film society movement (film appreciation groups)
and note a comment on one of their websites:

WRS Ltd of Colchester is a broker for filmsoc Public Liability & All Risks
Equipment Insurance Cover.
Cliff Stehlow of South Molton Film Society says: "My contact was Chris Chapman,
Director, and they used Ansvar Insurance, a company specialising in charities
and voluntary organisations. Their quote was about 10% less than another
broker's, who used the same company!"

So it may be worth contacting them. Their website is www.wrsinsurance.co.uk

Telephone: 01206 574416 / 760780
Facsimile: 01206 760734
Email: enquiries@wrsinsurance.co.uk

I have no dealings with the firm myself and am just passing on what I hope
will be a helpful tip.
