50 plus year old film !

Post by Albert Noble »

For old time sake I have put 'Button Ballet' made over 50 years ago on uTube. with other oldies.
A special tracking and crane mechanism was built to track and crane the camera for this
animated film.
No zoom lens being used (too dear )
It was quite successful in its time. If anyone can remember it , here it is again for old time sake
if you would like another viewing.
The pianist, Barbara Gibbons, alas, passed away many years ago.
The film is rather long and could do with a good cut, as could my hair. :-)

Gosh I have not seen that one for ages!

It is a little long for today's tastes, but still charming.
Thanks

If the world is still here in 50 years time, I wonder what people will think of our films? Perhaps they will be revered like the pop culture of the 1960's!

To an old man like me (and I suspect Albert Noble), fifty years is like the blink of an eye. I have some of my best work dating back that long and I remember some wonderful films such as the American documentary 'Cotton Eyed Joe '(Ten Best). Has the standard of film making improved? I don't think so, but the technology has transformed the quality of images and sound. Subject matter today is more imaginative, especially with documentaries and successful films seem to require conflict and social injustice as their theme. Maybe someone might like to assemble a programme of films selected from fifty year old LIAFF (pre BIAFF) and Ten Best winners, it would be interesting to compare the themes to today's offerings.

50 years ago people were more sensitive than the brash, fast life of today.
Film and all art forms will reflect that.
I shudder to imagine what life and film will be like in 50 years time.

As a mere youngster in his mid-70s ... it seems to me that for a long time in the amateur film movement, people avoided controversial documentary themes - at least in Britain and the USA. In much the same way as they avoided swearing or nudity, they generally did not film poverty, gay sexuality, injustice ...

Dave, I was alluding to that actually, the many festivals that I see, do seem to favour controversy, conflict, sexual orientation etc etc. They are usually very good films, no problem with that, but, in order to get noticed today I feel that a documentary has to be on those lines.

You, being a very International Man (see the current issue of the Magazine), must have noticed this.

I don't know how you think about your older films, Michael, but my films made
over 50 years ago would never get a good reception now.
" Childish, boring, slow, dated," would be todays comments from the younger
generation, even if they don't know if they are male or female.

Today, the only way to tell the difference between
a man or a lady is in the spelling :-) :-)

Funnily enough Albert, some of my very early 'impressionistic' films do stand up today, rather better in some cases than my current stuff. I think that my creative juices have dried up somewhat and I'm finding it all more difficult. But you are right, much of the pre 21st century output does seem slow and ponderous compared to later productions.

I'm back on the forum Tom after loosing my password.
Yes, that is a 16mm to digital transfer that
Rutland Productions did for me.
