Michael: I thought you said, on March 15th, that only 10 year olds would make a film on an iPhone! Are you regressing?
Give me landscape, Cinemascope, or 16.9 mode anyday! "Portrait" ratio will, and does, have great applications to be sure but I doubt if it will catch on for story telling other than in spilt screen techniques....which require a wider format anyway.
I think there is definitely a place for an "iPhone Competition" as the devices are so astonishingly good, easy to use and portable.
Bob
PS how can one publish a photo on this site?

To show photos they must first be online somewhere. In the case below I took an image from my Facebook collection.
From the icons above the message space click the icon of sun and a mountain.
That inserts two codes between square brackets [example][example] - the codes will be for "img" not "example" but if I write that they try to post an image.
Between the two codes paste the image URL.
Here is a cheesy picture of me at the promo for UNICA2019 which will be in the Netherlands.

I don't follow the reasoning. In that case why not have a "BMD Ursa" competition, a "DSLR" competition, a "Micro four-thirds" competition?Bob Lorrimer wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2019 10:50 am I think there is definitely a place for an "iPhone Competition" as the devices are so astonishingly good, easy to use and portable.
Whilst it is very impressive what different tools can do, they are all just that - tools. It's the end product that matters.

Bob, you"re absolutely right, I've just looked at past mails. However, as you will see above, I am a convert, at least for simple films. Look at my site michaelslowefilms.com and see "Down The Douro", all on an iPhone (AND I'm more than ten years old!).

Here`s the answer! Screw an old rotating type plate from a microwave to the back of a standard 16:9 TV. Fix this (securely) to the wall. Make sure it is very safe!!! When watching "normal TV" use as we do now. When watching phone footage shot in the upright position, rotate the TV to a 9:16 shape on the wall and the phone footage fits it perfectly. As a cheaper alternative, lay on the floor and view sideways. Simple.

Tim,
Yes... You are absolutely right!
A film is a film...if it is good enough it will engage an Audience irrespective of the shape of the format or the pixel count.

Not really Ned. Having full, immediate and easy control of exposure, focus and aperture as with the three rings on the lens of a proper camera can't currently be replicated on a phone camera, quite apart from proper audio inputs. Phones will increasingly be used for 'on the spot' shooting and holiday stuff etc as we are seeing.

Substitute "sofa" for "floor" and that's how I watch most films on TV anyway, so perhaps I'd benefit from a 9x16 formatKen Wilson wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 7:07 pm As a cheaper alternative, lay on the floor and view sideways. Simple.

There was a film in BIAFF 2018 that had been shot in the portrait format. From memory I think it was called "Girl" and was awarded 4 stars.
