Crowd Funding - HELP
Crowd Funding - HELP
Hi all, as the Judges at BIAFF found out the other weekend, I am crowd funding my next film. It is a VERY ambitious project that could lead to a feature film deal... so you can imagine i'm all quite excited!
I need help with the Kickstarter campaign. I'll put the link below, but i need as much help sharing it and donations towards it that you can muster. I'm currently way off my target, but i know it can be done! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Re: Crowd Funding - HELP
"The main bulk of the budget will be spent on locations, production design, costume and props, the actors, the SFX and our delightful creatures, which are being brought to life as hand and rod puppets as well as animatronics. We want to put as much of the money on screen as possible. We are going for a unique take on the creature features that rocked our worlds back in the 80’s and early 90s'
After a local film maker here tried to raise $50,000 on Kickstarter I posted a comment on this Forum that the opaque approach to budgeting does not help the cause of funding films this way. What you have written above on your campaign is the description of how you will spend GBP 25,000. Is it that you don't actually have a budget; in which case is your requested sum too small? Will you have to come back for more or is their champagne and caviar buried in this request (OK I know it's not but you see what I am getting at).
I am not trying to put down your project but potential "investors" need to be assured their money is wisely spent, the interesting part of your quote is that you are paying your actors; SAG, Equity rates?

Re: Crowd Funding - HELP
I quite agree Ned and when I did contribute a small sum toward Geoff's project (as I love his work and want to show some support) I even said I'd be interested to know how the team arrived at the figure.
However, I can foresee problems with providing a budget breakdown on a public forum (which is what a crowdfunding campaign is. No matter how detailed the budget, the cast and crew will see (or even worse, speculate) what each other is getting and indeed how much is spent on external services and I can guarantee some will start to feel discontent.
(I should, perhaps, add that I have not received a breakdown so please don't ask .... )
The other thing that intrigues me is why do people fund such things. I can understand someone like me contributing a small amount for reasons given above, but why would people contribute several hundred pounds? It's great that there are people who do. Perhaps they see themselves as philanthropists and if so, good on them.

Hi Ned,
Without going in to too much detail on the Budget. The rough breakdown is;
Crew - 8% (majority of the crew are working for free)
Cast - 28% (Equity Rates. This is quite high because we have a Hollywood actor involved)
Location - 10%
Accommodation for Cast & Crew - 10%
Camera Equipment, Lighting, and Crew - 25%
Practical FX and Puppet Creation - 12%
Music Licences and Score - 5%
Travel and Insurances - 2%
Things like the cost for the perks, the kickstarter fee, catering for the shoot - will be picked up out of my own pocket.
Hope that answers your question?

Re: Crowd Funding - HELP
Thanks; that completely clarifies why you need GBP 25,000. I don't know about UK Equity but I have worked on low budget projects here made under the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) special low budget rates. The most limiting factor is that the finished film may not exceed 35 minutes but for a "calling card film" this may be enough. Wish you success with your project.

Re: Crowd Funding - HELP
Sadly, we didn't quite make our target of £20k via Kickstarter... although we did reach an admirable £16K! But alas, with Kickstarter, if you don't reach your target, you get ZERO money, and no one is charged.
With that in mind, we are changing tactic and changing platform. So we're using IndieGoGo to raise the £10k Production budget - https://igg.me/at/DeadAirMovie
Our aim is to then attempt to raise the Post-Production budget at a later date. Hope this plan works! Share, Contribute, if you can.

Evening all!
Sorry i haven't been around in a while... i've been VERY busy with a few movies that are taking up all of my time! More specifically the crowd funding on my short film 'Dead Air'. Well... we smashed our target for the production budget and we shot the film back in early September this year. We're now running another campaign to cover all the post-production costs.
If you fancy backing us, the URL is https://igg.me/at/DeadAirFilm
Thanks again... and hope to catch up with you all just as soon as i get this film finished!
Check out the Teaser Trailer below too!
