My only issue with YouTube is that My number of viewers get frozen. I know that people are watching my latest offering but the the viewing number does not always alter. It appears only to be the last two uploads in HD that are affected. All the others are racing away into the thousands. There are things about YouTube I don't understand for instance how do thousands of uploaders get away with just videoing a TV show and placing it on YouTube. I've always understood the contents of your video had to be you're own work? This topic has strayed somewhat from its purpose although interesting to read. What's happened to the idea that the IAC web site would publish a list of YouTube identity names. I can't see the point of putting your videos on YouTube if the public don't know where to find them.

Thanks for bringing us back to the point, Roy.

One or two changes are coming to the IAC website soon ... keep watching this space!

On the IAC website go to the Watch menu and choose "Member Collections" ...

Looking good, Dave. Perhaps I'll have to be a bit more choosey as to what I put on my channel though as most of the material I post would not advertise the IAC very well - yet I still want to post it (for example footage of the last Remembrance Day which many locals have been grateful for even though it has little merit in terms of content, structure or quality)

On the other hand it does give visitors to the site a "warts and all" view.

Tim, merit is in the eye of the beholder. My railway video/AV sequences are hardly masterpiece cinema and are probably of no interest to many people but I like to think they're an interesting record of the event and my fellow railway enthusiasts may enjoy watching them.

I get a great deal of enjoyment putting the films together, and if there's a few other people who enjoy watching them that's a bonus for me!

I am with Peter ... these collections show visitors that yes, we have people who can shoot award-winning films. But the same people also shoot memories, local events and the kind of stuff anyone with a camera could do.

The other films in the Watch section of the website have had successes in BIAFF or UNICA or they are part of teaching courses ... the Members' Collections show what IAC members are really like.

Dave. You have excelled yourself. I was expecting just a list of identity names, but to see everyones channel on YouTube is simply great. Now all we need is more video makers to join in, why don't they? Is it perhaps that the majority of IAC members do not place their work on YouTube or Vimeo? It is their perogative of course. I do hope more people allow us to see their work.

I began with the people in this thread who volunteered their YouTube and Vimeo names, then to round off the page checked a couple of our most frequent contributors to add their ones. I know many other IAC people have their own collections but don't choose to take part in the forum. I might start digging up other channels ... but let we forumites gets the first bash of "glory"!

I suspect that this, along with the IAC Facebook page will hobble along for a while and then suddenly and unexpectedly take off as people see what a good idea it is. No doubt this will happen just at the point that Jan and Dave take a well earned holiday!

Roy was puzzled :
My only issue with YouTube is that My number of viewers get frozen.
If this happens at around 300 views, the answer is straightforward. On YouTube "views" are regarded like currency. Up to 300 views they regard as too few to worry about much. Over that they start to check more carefully that these are real views not robots or tricks of various kinds. Over 300 they check and update the numbers in batches. At the change-over 300 point this can mean a delay of half a day or more.

Remember that YouTube will cache copies of your video in its servers scattered all round the world, so to get the correct count of views they need to co-ordinate around the globe.

As to what constitutes a "view" - they are cagey. It seems to mean more than just clicking "go". No one has suggested it means the video has to be watched all the way through. My guess is that a minute or so of watching or a percentage of the total length is counted. But that is a guess.

Not wishing to be misunderstood as Willy was I can honestly say I heartily dislike YouTube. First of all I don't really understand how it all works, although I believe some of my shorter 1970's films are on it somewhere, I can't find them. Secondly I don't really want my films viewed on a tiny computer screen, they're intended for at least a 40'' plasma or LCD if not a 'cinema' screen, thirdly I was led to believe that there is a time limit of about ten minutes for a film. Something called Vimeo has been suggested as being better quality with no time constraints but I'm not sure. If any of you young digital whiz kids wants to help enlighten me I'd be delighted and would be prepared to take them out to lunch!

I'm not sure there is anything to enlighten you about?

It seems that mass market viewing isn't suitable for the sort of films you make.

Personally, I make films so that other people may enjoy them, so greater mass viewings is a benefit to me. If your films only really work on a high def 40" plasma, then no amount of persuading is going to change your mind regarding any digital Internet medium..
I like to make films, this is- my Youtube account. What's yours?

Mike

I do not use Youtube to post any of my video I use Vimeo

Vimeo is a much better platform and you can upload a reasonable amount of material in 720p HD format

Simply register and you can upload and also subscribe to any of the channels, groups etc that are there.

Proper movie makers have their own group where hundreds of movies are available.

If you have a look in the IAC webside under Watch > Member Collections you will find a link to my movies, if you look at Hong Kong Garden and/or Raffles both of these are 720p HD and they both look OK when viewed fullscreen on a PC/MAC

If you have a paid subscription with Vimeo you have more upload choices and options available

You will probaly find that with your editing software you can save your timeline/sequence in MP4 format via a Vimeo preset that may be present as standard, this is certainly the case with Premiere and Edius, that said you can upload any MPG or MP4 format file and Vimeo will convert if for you it just takes longer

If you are unsure how to make MPG or MP4 files then there is a tutorial of mine on how to do this on Vimeo

Whilst on Vimeo can I suggest you have a look at a movie called DUEL AT BLOOD CREEK, it is simply brilliant, I downloaded it to see how it looks on our Club's projected system and the clarity of image is great

Hope this helps
