HDMI v1.3

Post by tom hardwick »

Am about to buy a Blu-ray player and notice that some state they have HDMI v1.3 (and maybe different USB connectivity as well). Is this new HDMI worth paying more for? What will it do for me?

HDMI v1.3 is a current standard and you want it for the improvements is lip sync, audio formats supported, faster speed and increased colour depth.

v1.4 is also licensed but that is aimed at 3D so that is something else to consider.

Bluray encryption standards have changed over the last couple of years with many new releases not being able to be played on older kit. I have suffered in this rerspect in my Sony VAIO laptop as it will not play new Bluray movies like Avatar and some Sony PS3 users have also suffered (PS3's have Bluray players and hard discs internally), so as an alternative you may like to become a gaming addict as well.

Personally I have no intention of getting a dedicated Bluray player/recorder, I rip a Bluray disc on my editing PC and play the movie from solid state via the WD TV unit......sorry to digress.

Anyway hope this helps.

Hi Col,

I too had no real intention of getting a Blu-ray player but I needed one simply to test out the BD-Rs I make for people. I don't feel it's a real test to replay the just-burnt disc in the burner itself.

But I'm left with the nagging feeling that Blu-ray is all well and good but that the changes to the structure and replay inconsistencies (as you describe) are just the sort of thing to turn people off, people who should be buying into the format in droves.

As it is I always make DVDs as well as BDs, feeling the DVD will see a far wider audience and once upscalled will look pretty damn good anyway.
