Camera Insurance Good Experiences / Bad Experiences

Post by mentalgoat »

Does anyone have a specialist insurance company they'd recommend for their camera kit?
I could put it on the house insurance, but my friend has his musical instrument insured with Allianz, they sent him some smartwater to help recover his flute if it gets nicked, and covers him if it's stolen from the boot of his car (as long as he's not been reckless etc.)

It might make a good piece for FVM eh?

Cheers

I had a very good experience (well, as far as insurance went!) some years back when, whilst checking in for a flight from Miami Airport, I put down a bag beside me containing my Sony Z1 camera, three microphones, batteries, charger, tapes, cables etc. and it vanished! I informed the airport police and they expressed great surprise but I've since heard that Miami airport is the place for theft.

I claimed on my Household insurance under which I had covered in the All Risks section, camera gear amongst other things. Value had already been established with invoices and they paid up without a murmur.

On the other hand, when I was involved with the shoot of a feature film, I was doing the 'making of', my insurers didn't want to cover my gear for that and the production company had to include my kit with the unit kit.

I hope that this is of help to you.

Thanks Michael
I'm looking at taking up insurance with Imagemaker, they would cover my kit in the boot of my car as well as in the house.
Just a last minute check for horror stories before I commit.
