Film Clips - music videos

Post by Dave Watterson »

A common type of festival in Europe is for Film Clips / Song Clips / Music
Videos.

The general idea is to make something that illustrates a short piece of music.
Many are imitations of pop-videos as seen on MTV, KERANG and the like. Some
cover other types of music.

Should we consider such a competition in the UK?

The music copyright situation might be tricky, but my main worry is that
it might be boring for a festival audience.

What do you think?

Anything with 'POP' attached to it gives me the PIP!

Disney's origiinal 'Fantasia' was made along thoses lines...remember Mickey
Mouse and the Sourcerer's magician?
Chopping up firewood and buckets of water that got out of hand.
Wonderful.

But how can one do this with pop music that has little substance?
I would prefer to stick to film festivals as they are, and if someone wishes
to enter a music 'illustration' then OK, let him.

Here, here, here, wot's all this then?
Infringement of a Mal copyright? Does scotch Marmite jam up
yer bagpipes? There must be a joke somewhere about, "Did you hear the one
about the Scots, Irish and Welsh film makers?"
Albert.....joking apart.

Why do pop music have little substance? Sadly, many of them are driven by
commercial force but there is no fault in the art form itself.

There are many crap commercial films around, too.

PS. Northhamption's competition used to have a music video category, but
i don't think Music video is a very popular gene among IAC members anyway.
They are very different to be judged, sure... but we have been putting drama
and documentaries in head-to-head competitions all the time anyway. They
are very different too. I think there is no real demand in UK for music video
to be judged separately, however nothing stops competition organizers and
judges to view them more positively and fairly.

As most of my films are little more than pictures to music I would welcome
the idea! People overdo the concern about copyright since our films have
a very narrow based audience and I think we flatter ourselves in thinking
that anyone would be concerned. The IAC scheme (everyone should subscribe)
takes care of the actual transfer and re recording.

Same way we make any other kind of production... take the source, add a sprinkling
of imagination and a shovel full of hard work! I have seen some very imaginative
pop videos and every so often I see something that really fires me up (E.g.
that hard man of Hollywood - Christopher Walken delighting us with his choreography
(yes it was him dancing) in the pop video 'Weapon of Choice.'

There are lots of bland but expensive music videos out there but there are
also some very creative productions.

Pop music/pop videos suffer the same problems as script writers/film makers
I.e. how do you present the same old story or song in a new way.
