They are all 'self isolating' in their sunny gardens! Or suffering from the dreaded plague.

The CEMRIAC SPRING MOVIE FESTIVAL should have taken place in Derby today. Instead of it being cancelled, it went online this afternoon on Zoom conferencing, and I thought it all went splendidly. Well done to Simon Sumner for organising and hosting it, and a big thank-you to judge Paul Kittel. Paul had a really difficult task to perform as there were so many great films, 20 entries in total.
I have to say that I'm over the moon that my film GOOD GIRL won top prize, Ist place. It makes up for my personal disappointment in this film only being awarded 4 stars at this year's BIAFF (plus the KPM prize). I put everything I'd got into this film and had hoped so much for 5 stars or even a Diamond, but it wasn't to be.
Incidentally, I submitted 6 entries to BIAFF this year but only two of them were submitted under my own name. As an experiment I sent the other 4 films in under pseudonyms. This was an experiment that I won't be repeating! I got three 3 star awards and one 2 star award for the pseudonymous films, and two 4 star awards for the ones under my own name. That certainly taught me a lesson.

I agree Howard - it was a fantastic event and many congratulations on your winning film. It was well written, well acted and well directed. You must feel somewhat vindicated after your disappointment with your BIAFF results. Poppy was a very good film as well (as were most of the films).

Thanks Tim! For the record that other film was TOPPY not POPPY which will go in for BIAFF 2021 as I didn’t finish it in time for this year. (POPPY may well be someone else’s imaginary friend!)
My third entry for CEMRIAC was the three minute wordless film called THE TIFF which was given 3 stars at BIAFF. The BIAFF judges thought that it felt like a long 3 minutes and it should have been shorter. It’s always difficult to gauge these matters. If I’d made it shorter, a different set of judges might well have said it was too short and would have been improved by being a bit longer. Hey-ho. Also the judges appeared to want some kind of back story, some motivation for the argument depicted, which to my mind is totally irrelevant for this particular film. Everyone sees things differently.

Who plans to come to BIAFF in October?

This is a matter of concern, because though there are floods of entries in the competition, the number of people attending BIAFF has been declining.

Obviously a certain amount of guesswork is needed. None of us knows when the restrictions on public life will be lifted, when travel will become easier and when the risk of infection with COVID-19 will become negligible. Some of us have chosen not to have a refund for the tickets we ordered for the original date, but to pass the payment forward to October.

But who plans to come to Statford on Avon in October?

I do! And I didn't get round to booking a ticket for the MAY BIAFF.

Vera and I have decided to come. We missed BIAFF the last two years, but now not it's time to attend it again. The narrator of my documentary "HR Highland Laddie" is … That's one of the reasons to come. I am very grateful to him. Last time when I met him was at UNICA in the Netherlands. I would feel ashamed not to attend BIAFF. And of course I would like to meet you all again.

Stratford upon Avon is a nice place. It's on the edge of the Cotswolds, the area that I know so well. I visited William Shakespeare's birthplace some decades ago. I am sure it has not changed yet. In Belgium many festivals and competitions have been postponed. Even if they take place in October I will give priority to BIAFF.

You can count on me to be there!
I didn’t ask for a refund of the BIAFF tickets.
Once the event is confirmed I’ll rebook my two nights at the Hilton Hotel.
I’ll assume that my two 4 star films GOOD GIRL and PIECES will be shown on the Saturday.
It’ll be great to meet each other again assuming it can go ahead.
I’m still a little puzzled as to why more filmmakers haven’t gone on this forum to express their delight or disgust (or anything in between) with regard to their results and judges’ comments!

I would hope/expect to be there, even if only driving up for the Sunday (though in many ways I enjoy the Saturday more).

HS, because all the results are subject to the likes and dislikes of individual people. Film, like most art, is a subjective matter and opinions vary wildly. Competition is fun but making the film is even more fun, too many people get "their knickers in a twist" over results and comments. Enjoy and view other film makers work, that is the fun I get from Festivals.

We will be there if possible; depending on the end of the shut down, our credit from Delta Airlines being OK, still being alive then. haven't made any reservations but will take a chance.

We had not yet booked for BIAFF in May, but intended to be there. We have only missed one festival since joining the IAC in 1994, so even though we had no films entered this year, we would have been there. This has happened several times previously with no films entered, when we just enjoy the weekend and meeting people again and watching the films that have been made by others.
I expect we would still be going there if it does go ahead in October, but watching the news and following developments, I really can`t see restrictions on such large gatherings being lifted anytime soon. IAC membership is especially at risk as most people are in the older age group. The structure of the festivals is such that many people are coming into close contact with each other and the Sunday show especially has everyone in the one room seated close together.
Who know what will happen in the coming months and it`s a nightmare for anyone trying to plan and organise any event. Let`s just hope a vaccine or treatment of some kind is found soon.

Yes we just have to hope for the best and hope that by some miracle BIAFF can and will go ahead in October with a decent turnout.
With all filming suspended indefinitely I worry about how many new films will be made this year and submitted to BIAFF 2021. I personally make around 6 or 7 new films per year. I’ve completed just one film so far, shortly before the lockdown. I have five scripts ready to film with another handful of ideas in development but goodness knows when I’ll be in a position to make any of them. Making films is one of the main things I’m missing right now.
