DEADLINE FOR IAC WEBSITE COMPETITION and BIAFF 31 Jan

Just a reminder that 31st January is the closing date for two IAC competitions.

The IAC British International Amateur Film Competition (also known as BIAFF) for films and videos on any subject, of any length ... if you send your entry form and payment online and pop the film in the post immediately the competition manager, who is a very nice chap, may allow a little grace for "delays in the post". Details at http://www.theiac.org.uk/eventsnew/biaf ... ntest.html

That is open to everyone.

The contest for the Best IAC Club Website is limited to IAC Clubs (!) but is very simple to enter: send an email to website-competition@theiac.org.uk with the website address. There is no fee and every entrant receives notes from the judges which might help or inspire improvements.

Good luck!

Fraught wins the prize for most impatient forum reader! But not the award for most impatient film maker ... we have had a few enquiries privately already!

Judging took place on the weekend 17-19th February with about 276 entries this year - compared with last year's 214. There were many longer than 45 minutes and some feature length films. Judging is in two stages. The last of the first-stage panels finished viewing at 7.30pm on the Sunday. The final panel were going till after 10.30pm. Jury members then have two weeks to write comments on the films. Each one writes around 19 reports in which they try to indicate some key moments that they thought worked well and some that did not. The last of those reports will be reaching David Newman, the Competition Manager, on Saturday.

David checks them through to ensure every entry has its "crit" and that the score marked on the crit matches the records of what was decided during the judging . He plans to start sending out results to the film makers next week, so you should get your envelope in the next 10 days or so.

David likes film makers to receive their results directly before they are made public. We expect to receive the complete results late next week and plan to put them on the IAC website next weekend if we can.

Of course by tradition no one knows the winner of the Daily Mail Trophy for best overall film until the weekend of BIAFF when they will be announced at the climax of the Sunday awards show.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave. :-)

I am impatient... i'm also excited about the event as it's one i can get to more easily than others of late. :-)

It should be a pretty good BIAFF event ...

but also save up for October in Guernsey. I don't think you are the type to enjoy an IAC AGM weekend, but on the same dates, the Sarnia Shorts event is sounding promising. Would the family enjoy a weekend in that charming island? Getting there is never cheap but there is a good range of accommodation on the island.

It will probably not be so positive and upbeat as The Red Carpet Screenings but should offer a different approach than the old style festivals we have been used to in UK.

I'm very tempted to go to the Sarnia Shorts festival this year. I'll wait to see how my two entries do, as i'd rather not travel all that way if neither of my films are being shown.

I've entered 'Room 4' and '8 Ball' into a fair few festivals this year so far... so i'm hoping it will be a good year! We'll see! :-)

The BIAFF results should be winging their way to the film makers but they have not yet reached Jan. Mind you neither has the current FVM magazine. That makes it unlikely the results can appear on the website until Monday night (12th) or, more likely, Tuesday 13th.

Fraught, you are getting yourself into a terrible state! It will all happen in due course and do you not have a very good idea as to how you've scored? I can honestly say that, in over forty years of entering film festivals, I've hardly ever been surprised by a judgement, good or bad. I can classify the standard of my productions (and generally others) pretty accurately. It's who's done what that's interesting to me, together with how the technological advances have had an influence in the type of films being made.

Attending the festival if at all possible, (I had to miss last year's), is really well worthwhile, to see the films well presented on decent kit - we fervently hope!- is the thing.

LOL... sometimes i can be impatient! ;-)

It's weird, but i often get so close to my own material that i see them through rose tinted glasses. Things that some people would say are errors and need fixing, are things that i often put in on purpose for a reason... that often appears no one else understands! :-) I do make films for me and "hope" that they hit well with other people.

I think i'm good at rating other people's material though, but when it comes to my own... i'm not a good judge! :-)

Latest word from the Competition Manager is that he is sorry he is running a bit late. He hopes most people will have received their results by this weekend.

Given that one man, with a full-time job, is trying to coordinate all the write-ups from judges, sort out the programme for BIAFF and send films to the SoCo team to prepare for the shows, and has to contact the makers of 276 entries ... we cannot really complain!

His predecessor told us that being Competition Manager is an all-year round job but that the first three months of the year are frantic.

Yes, I understand, friends who take part in the British International Amateur Film Festival are spoilt. I admire the Competition Manager. He must be a man with quite a lot of energy.

This year I have 18 stars! I am not joking.

I am looking forward to attending the festival. The question is : wearing a bow tie or not wearing a bow tie at the gala dinner? Perhaps it is better to leave it at home this time. I have a long white beard now. You would not see my bow tie.

I encouraged a Belgian friend to take part in the festival for the first time. In our club competition his film failed. A judge didn't understand the meaning of "Atlantik Wall". Atlantik with a k at the end. It is a "wall" built by the Germans to defend the coast in Normandy. Actually also the bunkers of the Channel Islands are part of this line of defense. Now my friend got three stars. This morning he shouted of joy. He is extremely happy also because his film will be shown in Weymouth. I feel that thanks to BIAFF he has new energy to make new films.

It sounds like some have already had their results - I read in one of the region's club magazines that one of its film makers had received a four star result... so they are going out.

I'm still waiting to get notification I've hit the 2-star level this year ... maybe they're working 'top down ... and my entry is worth only 1 star :(
