Gotta love the local press:

"There will also be an advanced screening of a mystery film by multi award winning film maker James Webber"

Clearly the mystery element of Driftwood was so mysterious to me it totally passed me by.

I realise you are joking, Tim, because I spoke to James and Poppaea at the event. They regard you as a good friend and very helpful critic and often let you see early versions of their work because your notes are so good.

Needless to say Driftwood went down a storm. As usual there were a lot of very good films on show at the Red Carpet Screening but a special kind of respect and awe went out to this one. Interestingly Jim said he would probably not try crowd-funding again. It was successful for this film and gave him the novel and sometimes shocking experience of working with more crew than he has fingers. The production quality is very high ... but it was just as good on Dancer which was made for sandwich-money.

HATS OFF TO SEB HALL FOR ORGANISING THESE EVENTS

The festival is truly that - a chance to enjoy and celebrate film making without competition. It has created a group of Basingstoke-based film makers and friends who help each other out as required. Seb himself often turns up in credits for sound, while our own Geoff Harmer (aka "Fraught") is frequently driving the cameras. You could call the event the UPBEAT SCREENINGS ...

The event usually has one or two people with some specialist background to comment on the films - positively. This time it was Paul and John from http://strangersinacinema.com - a website which reviews Indie films as well as commercial movies. They are fun in person and on their website.

Lots of good work and relaxed interviews with the film makers made for a very entertaining time. Next festival date not yet announced but probably in six months or so. Watch out for it and make an effort to go. It's refreshing, inspiring and enjoyable.

I have a great respect for Jim and his film making talents and am honoured to be called a friend of his and Poppae's. He very kindly agreed to be a guest speaker and present many of his films at Staines last season. Whilst members without exception recognised his talent as a film maker there did seem to be a big difference in the perception of the subject matter between the "older generation" and the middling (me) and younger (Jim and Poppaea) generation. The old school (which, from my limited experience, seem to comprise 95% of members of IAC affilliated clubs) only saw the bleak and depressing side of Jim's films; only remaining 5% saw the positive message contained therein. This is perhaps indicative of one of te barriers the IAC has to attracting new members.

Nevertheless, I fail to see how Driftwood could be described as a "mystery". So, no Dave, I wasn't joking. Am I missing something (as I possibly was with "Pidgeon Post")?

Hi Tim,

I think it was a bad bit of grammar from the Paper's point of view... i think James & his film were the mystery rather than the genre of the film. :)

All in all it was a fab night, and really good to catch up with everyone. Sorry i didn't get to have a longer chat Dave, i hope we can meet up and chat more next time! :-)

The next event is in February.... although i don't know the actual date yet. :)

You may well be right. The thought did cross my mind.

It's crazy that I've yet to make a Red Carpet screening - especially as Basingstoke is only 40 mins away. Unfortunately I'm not blessed with a Jan or a Poppaea as a wife and so my "film" nights are more limited than I'd like.

You should come down Tim to the next one. They really are loads of fun, and the quality of films just seem to get better and better.

Just added it to the IAC website list of competitions and festivals ... under the "Events" menu and in the Diary.

I have raved about these events before ... be there or be sorry ... they offer an alternative to the traditional competitive gatherings which play such a big role in our world. There is friendly rivalry and no one gets medals or awards. Everyone enjoys fascinating movies and learns a bit about them and the people behind them.
