IAC AWARDS

Post by Dave Watterson »

The awards are now up on the main website - what do you think? Is it a good
balance of results?

A few of the entries I have seen elsewhere. Most of those either got the
award I would have given or one not far off.

The Daily Mail winner - the top of all - will not be announced until the
end of the festival. Apart from the final judges and Competition Manager
I doubt if anyone else knows what it is. It will be one of the "International
Standard" ones but as I have only seen four of the eight I can't guess.

Ken Wilson has three Golds (!!!) and his star, Narelle Summers, won the acting
award. It is good to see that the website's own technical guru, Alan Colegrave,
is among the Internationals, as is IAC Council member Alan Atkinson. While
Michael Gough gets Gold and a Commentary award.

Willy Van der Linden starts with a Gold, then a Silver Plus, three Silvers
and a Bronze. Sorry Willy you missed out Blue and Bronze Plus so you don't
get a Grand Slam prize!

It is good to see Willy's club-mate, Samuel Faict, starting with two Silver
Pluses and a Silver. Willy also had a large hand in ensuring we got two super
stories from Urbain Appletans which won International and Gold.

Was it Willy's influence or the work of our other Belgian friends, Christiane
Surdiacourt and Martin Bracke, that persuaded Florent Van Opstal to enter
and win Gold plus Best Camerawork? Or Hoskens Els to get Silver Plus?

Ian Gardner picks up a creditable Bronze Plus and a Blue in his first festival
... pretty amazing for someone working totally on their own.

SF enthusiasts, the Calvert family, do well with Silver Plus, Bronze Plus
and Bronze.

Anyway - congratulations to all. And let's never forget that a Blue award
is many steps beyond what the majority of camcorder owners could ever achieve.
Having spent some weeks working on cinematically dreadful family archive
footage I can vouch for that.

There seems to be a reasonably even spread... alot in the Bronze Plus area...

Although... i'm still waiting for my letter confirming where my film came...
so to see these results on the website with everyone else was a bit of a
surprise, and a little disappointing.

Don`t worry Fraught. I`m sure that they printed the results in reverse order,
Worse first! So it looks like the Daily Mail Cup is yours then, Congrats
to you! So what advise can you give me so I can achieve this next year!
I`m sure it is a glitch. Have you emailed the secretary to see if she sent
it out?
Goog luck.

It`s good to see so many faces on here that have put entries in the comp.
Well done to all of you and me! As you know, I watch alot of tv and get many
ideas that way. Even watching childrens tv you can learn alot about fades
and titles. It`s amazing how lucky we are in the field of quality equipment.
Just a few years ago we had analoge tape cameras and editing. I used to edit
with two video recorders and did the titles on my Amiga Computer. All this
costing thousands of pounds. Now you can get a camera for a couple of hundred
quid. My Canon MV630i was £349 and our PC`s are a fraction of the price they
used to be. I`ve lost my charger for my camera at the moment (may have left
it on holiday! so filming out of use at the moment!) Anyway, keep making
those films guys.

Dave, no entries! You must keep making those films but I serpose Goerge Lucus
has his breaks from filming!

Keep up the good work.

Sorry, Fraught. I think the Competition Manager believes all the letters
have gone out. Would you email me privately with details of entry etc and
I will chase it up for you.

Its funny Ian that you should mention using two VCRs and an Amiga... as that
is exactly what i used to do too... good old Deluxe Paint III! ;-)
I still have all that kit in my loft... god knows if it works still!?
I've gone up in the world to editing on my PC using Studio 10 Plus... which
i'm enjoying using, although its a bugger to install!

Thanks for that comment Dave, i'll drop you a mail now.

Do you know that even now Deluxe Paint 4(I had 4, it came with my Amiga 1200!)
is really hard to beat in graphics and what it did. I could do pictures,
titles spinning and scrolling, Morphing! Even photoshop what I use for picture
manulipitation doesn`t seem as good! Mine is in the loft as well. I also
had a genlock so I could mix animation and real life. I did a picture of
my sons police car and I had it driving across the table.
The good old days. YES, the Good old days. I`m 40 this year so i`m trying
to still be a teenager!
Keep filming!

Congratulations, Ken ! You deserve an international award for all the golds
that you have won up to now. It's impressive !

I didn't persuade Florent Van Opstal to enter and I think Christiane and
Martin didn't do it either. I had a chat with Florent last week. He started
making films when he was a member of my club in the good old seventies. I
was his narrator at that moment. He lives only 3 kilometres from my house.
It's also thanks to Dave that so many Belgians have entered. BIAFF is on
our national website for amateur film makers now, and so is the Guernsey
Lily Festival.

Of course I am happy with the results of our club-mate and young rebel Samuel
Faict. He has a silver plus, a silver, but also a bronze. In my opinion this
film ("Released") is his best one, but I feared that in Britain his film
would not be appreciated. To evoke emotion he used some very, very short
flashes of a TV-journal : a British citizen being murdered in Irak ! One
of our other members already told me that the British judges would be horrified
when seeing these frightening things. I think they have recognized the poor
man. Of course we also found this killing terrible. It's unbelievable the
things that are happening in Irak ! But I will forgive Samuel because he
did not intend to hurt the British. On the contrary even ! And he is also
a very talented young film maker. Hopefully he will go on making films full
of emotion.
