Copyright

Dear All,
I was just looking into submitting an entry into the Austrian Film Festival
(I think it was that one!). Anyway, I was looking at the rules and there
were two boxes to tick. One was `Do you hald the copyright for the sound?`
and the other was `Do you hald the copyright for the picture?`
Now. I hold the IAC`s licence for copyright, the one that you can buy from
them for £7.00. I bought this on the understanding that I could enter films
in competitions anywhere.
Now I don`t own the copyright, but I am allowed to copy stuff and show if
there is no financhial gain.

Am I covered?
Can I enter this comp.
I have entered the german comp and there was no boxes to tick on the entry
form.

Basically, yes.

IAC has always insisted that its clearance scheme allows films to be entered
for genuine amateur competitions anywhere in the world.

Picture copyright only gets involved if you have used other people's movies
in your one. Often people use clips from the Imperial War Museum, for example.
I know someone who used a clip from "Pearl and Dean" (with permission) in
his movie about a local cinema(!) You have to check exactly what the owner
of those clips allows you to do with them. Generally if they don't mind
you entering British competitions they are unlikely to worry about you entering
foreign ones.

Now the best way to make sure your movie is shown at the Festival of Nations
is to be there. As a matter of courtesy they always show the films of people
who take the trouble to attend. If you can sail your motorbike to France
it will take about 12 hours to drive from there to Ebensee. Of course you
might even persuade the family that a summer holiday in Austria would be
fun ... and not mention that there is a film festival until you get there.
They can go walking, sailing, sight-seeing etc while you soak in the movies
...

What silly b***** would use Pearl and Dean in their films! He is a really
nice person and he had permission to use it! He did however not get permission
to use Pathe News, but because he is a really kind and generous person, they
would have said `YES`!

Yes a nice holiday in Austria would be nice, but with my chill blain toe,
the cold would really get to it.
You really must start forgetting! What with my Commodore and my motorbike.
I`m glad you havn`t yet seen by `Amarillo` and `YMCA`!

Thanks for your info David.
