HI. I am toying with the idea of buying a Blu-ray player with a USB connection. Am I right in assuming that to play a video on a USB memory stick using the player I would also have to have a TV with a USB port. If this is so, there is no point in buying a new blu ray player as I could simply place the USB memory stick into the TV connection. The reason for my original thought of buying the Player with the USB port was perhaps I wouldn't have to replace my existing TV. The TV I have is an excellent Plasma 50inch HD model which is in excellent working order and I do not wish to replace it. Thanks for reading this.

Your TV will have an HDMI socket, probably 2 or 3. The BD player will plug into one of these sockets, (or maybe into your surround sound amp and that will take the signal HDMI to the TV). It will play your Blu-rays as well as upscale your DVDs which is a nice feature

Some people find it better to have the disc player beside their sofa, connected using a long HDMI cable. This allows them to change discs easily, and if the player also accepts USB sticks, allows them to watch solid state files.

I can't see a reason for you to replace your plasma, unless you wanted a smart TV that uses less electricity.

Hi Tom. Thanks for your reply. I have already several Blu-ray players and they are connected to HDMI inputs on the TV. , Also my TV is connected to a scart connection and I have a Super VHS recorder connected to it as well as a Panasonic Blu-ray recorder. I have several smaller TV's scattered around the house as well as my main 50 inch TV but none of these TV's have got a USB hub. What I want to know is will the usb port on a Player actually send a signal to the TV which has not got a USB port.

I haven't got a USB socket on my BD player so I can't answer from experience, but I'd say that BD players have USB ports for precisely that reason, to play movie files into your TV down its HDMI cable.

Hi. Thanks Guys for the info. Actually I have just discovered that all my Blu-ray players have got USB sockets and I have played movies using a USB flash Drive. As for years I have used the player only to play videos via the remote so I have never needed to open the flap at the front of the unit, that is where the USB socket is. HOWEVER there is a downside (there always is) in that the players only work with FAT 32 flash drives which limit use up to 4GB. I have heard of XFAT32 memory sticks, which is said to increase storage space to more that 4GB. I don't know if my LG players would accept these though?

Roy, you can try it!
Select a USB stick that you have no daa on that you want to keep.
Insert your USB memory stick into your PC (I'm assuming you're running Windows)
In Windows Explorer (or My Comuter) right click on the USB drive
Select "Format"
One of the options is exFAT under "File System" - select that.
Click Start and in a few seconds (or minutes?) you'll have a USB stick formatted as exFAT.
Copy a video file to it and see if it plays in your player.
