Peter B - when you upload a film to You Tube there's a check-box, 'Do you mind having adverts placed over your film?'. You obviously left this to YouTube and have allowed them to do it.

Thanks for that info Tom. The check-box is either relatively new, within the last 6 months or so, or I missed it! (probably the latter :( )

I "hate" Youtube. Someone asked me to translate his film for BIAFF. The English would enjoy his film he said. "The subject is very interesting." He was very enthusiastic. After some time I said "yes" though I had also told him a few times that there are many mistakes in his documentary. I also told him how much an entry would cost.

Four English friends helped me: the first one corrected my mistakes; the second one contacted two friends...; the third one read the text and the fourth one recorded the English voice. The second one sent me a CD. He didn't charge anything because I had already helped him in the past. It was a favour in return, he said.

Result: you can find the film on Youtube and that chap has decided not to enter his film for BIAFF 2013. I am disappointed. I feel embarrassed. My clubmates understand my feelings.
But again I will try to forget it. Let's say: "that's part of life".

Now I am looking forward to attending BIAFF 2013. Today my friend, who has an entry, has confirmed that he will accompany me. I remember BIAFF that took place in Chesterfield last time. We also made a daytrip to the Peak District... We had a wonderful time.

I'm not sure I understand - Did one of your friends "pirate" his film and put it on their Youtube site or something?

He put his translated film, so I mean the English version, on Youtube, Chris. Of course I cannot mention his name neither the title of his film. That's a matter of serenity. He is not interested in showing his film at festivals or competitions anymore, only on Youtube. His behaviour is enough to make me despair. I spent some time on his film just to help him. But of course I am not willing to translate his films anymore. One lesson we can learn: it is getting more and more difficult to encourage filmmakers to take part in festivals. "Thanks to" Youtube they can show their films to people all over the world.

I see - I think that's a strange thing to do - I put all my films on both, as I want as many people as possible to see them, but you also can't beat a live audience reaction to your film.

I love Youtube, as it's probably created more amateur filmmakers in the last 5 years than have been created in the last 30+ years by local clubs!

The fact is, it's *different* and things change. if a club or festival is to survive change, it must embrace change, and not dig its heels in and rest on its laurels.

Willy, you clearly feel let down that this person asked you to work on his film for BIAFF, but then didn't enter it into any festivals - that's fair enough. But surely it's no reason to hate YouTube. Perhaps after it was completed he agreed with your original feeling - that the film wasn't very good and contained many mistakes and perhaps he thought it wasn't good enough for festivals.

Like Chris, I put everything on YouTube. Most is accessible via specific links only - these can be
1. Work in progress (it's a great way of showing first cut edits to people I'm working on a film with)
2. Examples/tutorials - accessible via video making forums.
3. Videos that have no interest outside a specfic group of people - family videos eic

But I also put my more "serious" work there as well, open to anyone who wants. These are usually films that I've entered into club competitions, some of which i may also enter into festivals.

Many of the top BIAFF films are available on YouTube.

It give you the best chance of having your film seen by the largest number of people.

Of course I don't really hate YouTube. I wrote the word "hate" between quotation marks. But when someone asks me to translate his film in order to enter it into BIAFF and afterwards it appears that he/she doesn't want to show it at the international festival(s) like BIAFF then I am very disapppointed. Actually he only wants it/them on YouTube. I enjoy translating films and there is a forum friend who always corrects my mistakes. I am very grateful to him. English is my second or third foreign language. It is always interesting/fascinating to know what mistakes I have made. But translating a text takes some time and I don't charge for it. If you ask a translation agency to do the job you must pay perhaps £1,500 or more. And yes, "fair play" is also important in life. It's something typically English.

So the more films that can be shown on YouTube the better.

I didn't really imagine you hated YouTube, Willy, I was just playing along with you. Having said that, it's not YouTube's fault that your acquaintence didn't play fair.

The funny thing is, I "love" YouTube.

I earn a significant amount of money from my videos every month, and I watch easily 2 hours a day of videos there too.

I think you "hate" the person you did the translation for! :-)
