WHAT ARE YOUR YOUTUBE / VIMEO ETC NAMES?

Roy1 made the sensible suggestion that we gather the names under which contributors to this forum and their friends store their work on video hosts like YouTube, Vimeo, Daily Motion and so on ...

Pop the name/s on in this thread and we will make a list on the main IAC website ...

The more we can see of each other's work, the better.

I've got about eight of my early films (16mm FILM) on YouTube. I always find it tricky to find them but manage eventually, they're all in a line. Those were the days when I made short 'impression' cut to music films. I think they're all in the IAC library (Dave?).

Editor: type "Michael Slowe" into the YouTube search box. And yes, many of them are in the IAC film library if you want to see them big-screen at home or in the club.

I have "The Raven" uploaded on the youtube, but the viewing options are set on private, so if anyone's interested (maybe) to see it, I'll have to add your username on the list. I suppose this may be a bit off-topic (or at least seem like a blatant self-promotion  )but I haven't found a thread suitable enough :)

For those who may not recognise the name or the film, The Raven won 4 stars at BIAFF and Emily attended the event. The latest issue of SoCo news has an article from her about the making of the film. The magazine is in pdf form and can be downloaded from http://www.mysoco.org

Use the PM (private mail) option to contact her if you want to watch it online.

If you're apologising about the blatant self promotion, why do you have the viewing options set to private? :-)

I've heard that sort of thing a few times with filmmakers, and I'm curious why? When I make a film, I want AS MANY people to see it as possible, and happily SHOUT ABOUT it from the rooftops. The more people that see it, the better.
Until I become a famous Hollywood director, all my films are as free as can be to watch. My reward is the lovely comments I get from viewers.

Which equally makes me wonder about people putting their films on Vimeo. The "apparent" improvement in quality is questionable at best, and technically unlikely. So why would you put your film on a site that will guarantee that significantly less people get to see it?
Is it something like an "artistic integrity" sort of reason?

Chrisbitz - I suppose I am still a a bit cautious when it comes to audience. This being my first film, I have yet to deal with my shyness and the cruel truth that not everyone will have positive reactions to it. Before I gain more experience and skill I find it more pleasant to show my film only to people whose opinion I value and also to film enthusiasts and professionals because they can appreciate the effort invested in the very process of filmmaking. Still, the main reason is that I am quite often taken aback by completely unnecessary, downright rude comments on the youtube regarding even the most benign of the clips, so I want to protect 'my baby' from it
I'm sure you've come across this kind of youtube 'vandalism', unfortunately
When my films reach some Terry Gilliam quality, they will certainly be available to everyone and immune to everything

Chrisbitz, you ask why people put their videos on Vimeo. I have my own website which is essentially an on-line photo gallery and when I wanted to add my videos to the site uploading them to my own webspace was clearly impractical. So I went for the obvious and popular option, YouTube. Later on I discovered Vimeo and found that it offers me much more control over how my videos are embedded and displayed. With Vimeo HD videos are embedded and play as HD by default. During the couple of weeks it took me to upload my videos to Vimeo I had both YouTube and Vimeo embeds on my site, and the Vimeo ones were better quality both in terms of the actual video playback and the thumbnail image. Also Vimeo doesn't put adverts over your videos like YouTube sometimes does.

I do of course realise that if you want to get your video seen by lots of people then Vimeo is perhaps not the place to put it, after all everyone (and their dog) has heard of YouTube while very few have heard of Vimeo. But Vimeo suits my purposes very well.

Just to correct a common misconception about Youtube, it doesn't put adverts over your videos unless you specifically ask them to (or you've illegally used copyright music in your film). Until recently the option was only open to successful filmmakers with a certain number of views or subscribers, but now anyone can opt in if they wish.

The adverts are a great way to earn pocket money out of your films, in fact I'm earning a respectable $60-$80 a month from my channel, so of course I'm more than happy for them to put an advert at the start, and it's very easy for the viewer to click the x in the corner and remove it too.

Regarding playback quality, I thought I was the only one, but it seems a lot more people also experience the stuttering and long pauses during Vimeo playback.
Personally my films need to be shown non-stop, and to regularly have playback issues is a deal-breaker for me.

YouTube put adverts over a couple of my videos without asking, and there was no illegally used copyright music in either of them. I guess I just got unlucky and YouTube thought the music was similar to a copyrighted piece.

I haven't had any stutters or long pauses since the early days of broadband when watching video on a 0.5Meg connection was a challenge.
But there's so many links in the chain between a PC showing the video and the server sending it that if one breaks the video stutters. :(
