Has it really been so long?

Post by FILM THURSO »

Movies first came to Thurso somewhere between 1896/97 (still hunting that first advert before the 1897 publication) and were shown in the Town Hall or Temperance Hall on various occasions throughout each year. Many historic moments were brought to Thurso including the funeral of Queen Victoria and even "Trip To The Moon" was shown when it first came out. It wasn't until 1912 that Thurso was to have its very own cinema at the Temperance Hall. There were a few different operators that year but by the end of 1912 the Electric Picture House had become regular tennant at the hall. In 1914 Edison's talkies were shown but silent films continued up to June 1931 when they returned for good at the purpose-built Picture House Cinema on Sir George's Street, Thurso which was built in 1922.
As you may have guessed by now, this being 2012 we celebrate the not just the 100th birthday of the Picture House but also the 90th birthday of our first purpose built cinema which is now a nightclub in which mainstream movies were brought back last year. Gosh, breath!
So happy birthday Picture House, Thurso http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lkjOQlc2bA

It's all just so terribly exciting that sometimes things get wrotten ring. Silent films showed for a month in 1914 then made a total return in 1931 :D
