Viewing 25fps on your still camera's screen

Post by tom hardwick »

I've had a question from an animator. He wants to use a digital camera of some sort to film his animation using individual frames just as in film days. Then - in camera - he wants to be able to play back this footage at 25fps either onto the camera's screen or down cables to a TV. There are to be no computers involved, mentioned or hinted at.

Of course the still camera will have to have be shooting in a 16:9 low-res mode (1920 x 1080), but even so I couldn't think of a single camera that can do this. Can any of you?

I don't know of any camera that will do this either. I think he would have to download the frames into a video editing programme to be able to view them as an animation. I recall seeing a documentary about Aardman animation (it might have been on a DVD bonus disc) and they use SLR cameras but if I remember correctly I think they were hooked up to a computer so the pictures went straight through to the editing software.
