SPAM MAIL

Post by Tony Grant »

Why do we allow this Forum to be penetrated by SPAM mail this time NEW YORK ESCORTS . I use forums by EDIUS, SONY, and other ‘filmmakers’ forums but it is only from the IAC I get regular SPAM. I think it is time our Webmasters take professional advice. If others can stamp out SPAM so can we.

To answer my own question, I think it might be that so few people use the forum the spams are not spotted quickly, I see the same names all the time, come on everybody lets make this forum more interesting and more USED

Removal of Spam is important Tony - as soon a moderator gets notification of a post (which assumes we are at a machine at the time of course!) it gets checked out. This morning I removed a spammer permanently and deleted their posts. He or she had the cunning technique of simply 'quoting' an existing post, and interspersing the message with a web link - which was (merely?) a shopping site. I'm not sure if any web management software would be able to detect such an intrusion.

Spam is a nightmare. What I would personally like to do the the perpetrators ...well lets just say their voices would be very highly pitched afterwards.

If you spot a spammer before a moderator, be assured it won't be around for long.

Tony - you perhaps see more SPAM than most readers, because you are clearly a morning person and on the continent your morning starts an hour earlier than ours in UK.

We, voluntary moderators, check regularly through the day - my last look round is about midnight most nights.

The registration system means that automatic spamming programs cannot get onto this board - around 40 a day try - but human beings can. Most of these people seem to be Chinese, possibly students with enough English to follow the instructions and being paid some minimal fee by the spamming firms.

One of the worst cases I ever saw was the tourist information website for Tunisia. At the foot of a page with the usual stuff about hotels, attractions, restuarants and so on was an area for comments which was filled with spam, much of it pornographic in nature and quite explicit. I emailed the webmaster but to little effect.

At least spam here seldom survives more than an hour or so ... and does not get on to our private email addresses.
