Recommended movies on the web - UPDATED

Post by Dave Watterson »

In various threads we recommend movies we have seen on various websites. I suggest we keep this thread exclusively for such recommendations.

If you like the idea then please add links to movies you think we would enjoy - your own or other people's films. But let us keep comment on them to a different thread so that this one is ONLY for recommendation. That way it may become a valuable archive of films worth watching.

I'll start with this one:
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1939554
It demonstrates yet again that the subject matter of a film is what is most important. It is simply the point-of-view record of someone walking along a perilous "walkway" on a cliff side. I gasped after one minute and felt my stomach churn after three.

There is a whole raft of independent (both amateur and professional) short films at the 'Shooting People' website here:

'Cheese makes you dream' caught my eye

This is a superb film! Its a short 8 minute film, actually shot on 35mm. I was pointed its way by one of the FX guys involved who is a Senior at Columbia College, Chicago.

The production values are stunning, as is the camera work. Not 100% sure what its about... but revel in its glory. :-)

There is an amazing compilation of clips from commercial movies which have been made into a send-up version of those tv shows: "100 best xxx movies"

White Red Panic

A great example of the kind of look you can get by playing around with colour correction in post.

A great looking movie with plenty of follow up from the director who is more than happy to share his experiences.

Did you ever think you could make such a beautiful looking movie with a digital SLR?

This is the first production by XDL Films (myself Pat Mahon and Robert Letham). We've joined the IAC and SAM and are operating purely as a film making group. Plans to film a longer movie for which we had a finished script had to be deferred but we needed a film for the Strathclyde Film Competition to the theme "Job Done". This was filmed in an evening and edited over a frantic Sunday with final Sound FX added the day before the competition. I hope you like it.

There is a slow stream of Christmas-related movies turning up on YouTube and other video hosts. I'm sure you can add to the list, but for starters:

The Digital Nativity ... the story re-told as if it happened in today's networked world:

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas ... the wish of an innocent child:

The Greatest Action Story Ever Told ... the Terminator meets Christ :

Carol of the Belts ... charming, bell-ringing musical interlude :

and my current favourite:

An Unexpected Incident in a Mall ... shoppers pausing for a snack find a change from the muzak:

Come on, let's build a definitive list!

Cheers Chrisbitz, glad you enjoyed it. Mark who wrote and directed it, did so just for as an excuse to test out his new Canon 550D. He also made another film called 'Meat...', i'll put the link up later, but if you can't wait... have a browse for it on YouTube.

If you enjoy commercial animation you will love this brilliant parody of a Pixar intro film.
