Hi b

You could try:
www.script-o-rama.com/
http://www.scriptchat.net/free-film-script.shtml
http://www.simplyscripts.com/

Or do a hunt using Google for the kind of short stories you like:
crime, love, science-fiction, thriller, ghost etc - you will find
lots of them. If you like one ask the author if you could try to
film it ... no fee but a free copy of the finished work.

Or think of a fairy tale and transpose it to the modern world.

Or read a newspaper and try to imagine the stories behind what is
reported.

There are script-generator programs around but they are little more
than a system a neighbour of mine used for many years. He had a tin
with lots of small index cards. One section was characters, another
conflicts, another locations and so on. Each had a few lines of notes.
He used to pull out a random couple of characters, a conflict and a
location etc then try to shape that lot into a story. Worth a try?

Good luck

Dave

Make a film about a man who cannot find
ideas for scripts. In searching for them
he meets the girl of his dreams, or falls
under a bus, or.....???
Albert....request stop.

All scripts originate from the question "What if?" just complete the question
with your special interest or whatever. What if I was asked to play rugby
for England/build a new garden wall/teach my daughter to drive/go for a job
interview etc add in the genre - horror/comedy/romance/western etc and in
no time you have the idea off and running.

Good luck,

Albert, your reply reminds me the film "Adaptation" with Nicolas Cage, about
a writer struggling to adapt a novel, and is one of the best films i've seen
recently.

The funny thing is that the writers (Charlie & Donald Kaufman) were initially
asked to adapt a novel, but they ended up with a script about a writer who
wants to adapt a novel, and they did not win the best adapted screenplay
at Oscar because many juries thought that the script was too original.

What about a film about a man who struggles to come up with an idea for a
film and drives himself so mad that his brain explodes!! A passing group
of film makers then find individual bits of his brain and try to extract
the ideas from it that he was working on when it exploded. One bit of brain
doesn`t realise that it`s ideas are film scripts as the other sections are
missing and has ideas to take over the world but then... Aaaaarrrggghhhh...
I think that I have made too many films!!!!
Ken.

Oh goody, let's turn into a science fiction film.....
Along comes a dog and eats part of the brain laying in the road.
Dog can now talk etc. (an interesting nle exersize here to dub male
spoken words onto mute film of a barking dog).
A cat also eats part of brain. Cat now talks too. (female voice over).

Now we can really hear what a cat's opinion is of dogs.....
"You come near me you stupid tail wagging crawler and I'll scratch
your stupid baleful eyes out!" etc etc

Albert....baling out.

By chance I glanced at the latest "Writer's News" and "Writing"
magazines today. In their script-writing section the notion
put forward was that an essential hook for a narrative script
is a moment of decision.

The idea is that the audience identifies with the character who
has to make a decision - "Is this true love?", "Do I abandon my
job for my faith?", "Should I risk dying for my country?" etc.

Tie that up with the usual hero trying to achieve something and
villain trying to stop them.

Does that seem helpful?

Dave

PS I do like Michael's report on the Oslo Festival and the first of
Ken's conversations in the main website.
