The 3 control buttons on side of LCD screen are not working.
I have followed the instructions in the manual under CALIBRATION
without success. I have even tried a reset, still not working.
Has anyone encountered this problem or can offer any help.
The camera is the Sony HC1 and the Zoom and Rec/Standby
controls on the main body work fine.

I hate these things. Stuff which ought to work just hangs up for no clear reason!

Just to be quite clear, Stubie, did you mean that you have tried the stuff recommended on page 108 of the manual -

Especially - did you make sure the screen was not rotated and that you were on power from the mains adapter?

It sounds to me as if the flat flexible cable has either broken or come away from its end contacts. Sony viewfinders are prone to this, where the constant pivoting of the v'finder body breaks the connection after a few years.

It seems odd that the screen itself continues to work when the three controls have given up as I'd expect them all to have the same flexible cable feed. Time for Sony to have a look at it I'd say, though the cost of repair for a camera of this age (and the fact that all those controls are duplicated on the camera's body) may make it uneconomic and somewhat unnecessary.

Yes Dave I did try everything from the manual to correct it but to no avail and
Tom you were right about the braid that feeds the LCD screen.
It apparently is a common fault with this camera.
I must be unlucky as 3 other members of our video club have the same camera
but not had this problem. Time will tell!
I have now had it repaired by an ex-Sony engineer and he tells me that
the braid was only partially damaged hence the picture was still visible.
The cost was £70.00.
Cheaper than a new camera and hopefully will last me a few more years.
