Re: Hybrid camera, Piccolo and Colour Grading
My old friend and rival Willy! First of all Willy, you are not old, I am twelve years older than you and am only just starting to wonder whether my film making days may be coming to an end. That being said I insist that you do not have to keep up with all the wonderful technical developments to make...

Re: Open Film Night Summer Chalenge
As I was the nominated 'judge' for this on line event I feel entitled to comment. I tend to agree with Dave in that the point about film making is to express yourself and to create a piece after considerable thought and preparation. I was full of admiration that the people who made films for this ev...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?
Dave, Potter's Lunch does actually tell a story of these artists, whereas, as Howard points out, I don't really tell stories with my 'cut to music' shorts such as Ski Break, or my recent Zebra. All this goes to show how impossible it is to define the purpose of any art. Art can do anything for the v...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?
What a load of rubbish!!! Of course these modern "AV" presentations are films. Some are absolutely brilliant, some rather boring, as with our own films. How people can maintain that AV is a separate art from film is beyond me. It doesn't matter one little bit but it is rather annoying that...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?
I must say that I feel guilty for not attending BIAFF this year. This was the first one I have missed since I attended my first, which was called LIAFF (London International Film Festival), and was held at a hotel near Westminster called St Ermins in 1976 I think. I had a top award and was anxious t...

Re: Judging-FVM June
Thank you Willy for your kind words, we have quite a lot in common with our taste of films and we both tend to make factual ones and documentaries. I am amazed at your story of your trip to Preston. Firstly that you were good enough to undertake the job of solely judging 24 films and then undertakin...

Re: Judging-FVM June
Totally agree with Big Dave, I thought that The Apartment (not the one with (Walter Matttau & Jack Lemmon), was a better film than The Dig. The latter had a good gag but was very limited.

Re: Judging-FVM June
Good point Albert. Both of us, many years ago, caught the fancy of Tony Rose, the Editor of the much missed magazine Movie Maker. I was lucky enough to get quite a few Ten Bests from him and his team, as I seem to remember did you. We made audience friendly, easily viewed films and once they latched...

Re: Judging-FVM June
There seems to have been more discussion (and criticism) this year about 'scores' and judges comments than I can remember over the last fifty years. Quite apart from this Forum I have been involved in private exchanges between three or four entrants to this year's Festival. People have been asked to...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
I hope that we are not over using our time on this Forum but we may as well continue! Howard, I'm sorry, but i see no justification for the behaviour of that film maker following his One Star. The film was obviously not considered very good, surely he could accept that. Not wishing to labour the poi...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Howard, I really can't understand you saying that people feel "insulted" by a low grade for their film. It obviously can't be very good and they have submitted it for judgement, they may be disappointed but how insulted? We all make poor films from time to time, it is a difficult art and i...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Thanks Dave, I was hoping to watch a selection of the films on line at my convenience. It's a pity that we can't obtain access to any film of our choice, after all, they are entered for public viewing. Will the film Milky Way that Willie mentions, be one of those made available?

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Very sensible post Tim, judges watch films just as we do in the cinema (streamed nowadays) and first impressions are all, in my opinion. Those of us who habitually attend BIAFF should have a pretty good idea of what grading a given film deserves, simply by dint of having seen so many each year, and ...
