Re: Standard 8, Hi8, MiniDV and HDV tapes. What to do with them?
Well said Dave, the performance history of these drives is not encouraging. I don't even trust them to hold camera XDCAM files whist shooting a film, I back up twice before taking media into my edit hard drives. Col, in my opinion you might do well to purchase a professional deck, such as the Sony D...

Re: Telephoto lens required for filming waders.
I've been reading this thread with interest and waiting for someone to make the suggestion that I expected. An IAC prizewinner (schoolmaster I think) of a few years back, made a film about a Dipper bird by a Scottish river. I was in correspondence with him having admired his film and I learnt that h...

Sky Transmission
Just a brief note that one of my films "The Leader of the Pack" is being aired by Sky Channel 280 (Horse & Country) on Monday 10th January at 8.30 pm, at least that's what I have been advised! I don't know how widely the channel is available but when they broadcast one of my other film...

Re: AMPS 2010
Well done to the winners at AMPS, always a good competition. Interesting that Michael Gough's film on Dylan Thomas got its just reward, I saw it recently and was amazed that it didn't get a major award at BIAFF, the vagaries of judging have been the subject of many a post. It's just that people see ...

Re: PC Monitor v TV
My set up appears to be similar to that of ChrisK in that I have two computer monitors for doing the editing and a separate properly calibrated one for viewing and grading. I just changed from two old CRT computer screens (Dave's right about the weight!) and the new LCD's are so much brighter and HD...

Re: Pattaya
Hello to my good friend Willy, we only seem to meet on the forum nowadays. I was incensed to read about the mayor who denied the film makers. First of all he forgot that his first obligation was to the local community (and that especially includes artists) and secondly he would probably have got a b...

Re: The enthusiam of youth
Tom writes "us oldies", my goodness, he's about 20 years younger than me and I'm only middle aged! The general view is that experience gained by actually doing it is the key to film making with the very rare exceptions of the really really talented imaginative artist who somehow manages to...

Re: Guernsey International Short Film Festival 2011
Couldn't agree more about the 'semi pros', students etc being allowed to compete with us pure, unsullied 'amateurs'. How else are we to judge our skills? Dumbing down is never a good idea and anyway, as has been said a thousand times, kit and facilities do not necessarily equate with quality. Even t...

Re: The enthusiam of youth
Well, this young chap certainly sounds keen and won't take no for an answer which, to my mind, are prerequisites for film making. If he has the talent (particularly in editing) that you mention then he should have as much chance of succeeding as anyone else. Of course there are loads of promo produc...

Re: The Guernsey Lily Festival 2010
Good to hear from Willy again. I well understand that his film has exhausted him, I'm just finishing a documentary and I'm knackered and my wife has hardly seen me so tough was the edit! On the subject of how can the Guernsey Lily be kept going without the Rouillards, even if the money is forthcomin...

Re: Getting our Films Seen.
Ah Peter, yes that is the real question but I don't know if they can ascertain that. In fact I'm damned if I know how they count the audience. Perhaps with cable they might know but satellite or air, how do they do that? I would like to think that they got so hooked on the subject that they stuck it...

Re: Belgium calling
As an old fashioned but experienced documentary film maker may I add my own personal opinion? Brilliant piece of film making but spoilt by much too much gimmickry. All the split screens moving around distracts from (a) the music and (b) the visuals. Cutting would have been so much better in my opini...

Re: Camera Insurance Good Experiences / Bad Experiences
I had a very good experience (well, as far as insurance went!) some years back when, whilst checking in for a flight from Miami Airport, I put down a bag beside me containing my Sony Z1 camera, three microphones, batteries, charger, tapes, cables etc. and it vanished! I informed the airport police a...

Getting our Films Seen.
I have just been told that in last week's published viewing data my film 'It's an Alpaca!' achieved the joint highest rating for the week when it was shown on the Sky channel 280. Mind you, not quite 'Strictly Come Dancing', as the viewing figure was 13,000, but better than the local club in the chu...
