I didn't know that the IoW has F4 and F5 tornadoes which will lift a car and destroy a brick building.

I have jusrt read this thread for the first time having decided that the Mac v PC thing is a bore. The reason I use a Mac is that my first NLE program (EditDV) was originally specifically for the Mac. When EditDV died I moved to FCP which is also Mac specific. My Mac is connected to the net as this ...

Just a quick note to let readers know that I still have a PAL DV VX1000 and am happy to get stock shots of the local National Parks/area for them. Nearby are Zion, Bryce, N Rim Grand Canyon, Pine Valley Mountains (over 3000 metres), state parks suchs as Kodachrome Basin, Snow Canyon, Coral Pink Dune...

In answer to Brian, I too am a Goons/Jazz/Python/Films Noir fan which my parents found awful. The point I tried to make is the older generation ALWAYS looks down on what the younger generation sees as new and great. In other words our generation is the new "old geezers" as we moan about wo...

How the older generation enjoys complaining about the next generations. I remember my parents views about jazz (that awful noise cannot be music), those terrible American gangster films where you can't see what is happening (all Films Noir), later The Goon Show (how can you possibly think that is fu...

Who is on line?

Whenever I log on there are between 6 and 8 "guests" on line, bear in mind that I often log on when it is the middle of the night in the UK. Who are these people or are they some form of robots scouring the net for the unwary?

Well this thread really has got going. Thanks for coming to my aid Michael, greatly appreciated. Several new "cans of worms" have been opened so here I go, remember, these comments are MY views and I cannot speak for anyone else although I may have a tendency to do so from time to time. I ...

OK, so I'll stick to the main topic, no judges. The basic question is does the style serve the subject? Take a film like Breaking the Waves, hand held throughout, some unusual framing of the subjects and a story to crush you. It works!! Lars von Trier has a different approach and he directs his cine...

My reading of this is that Traditional is Hollywood 50s/60s and New is anything that does not conform to that style of film making. So we are looking at a film in its totality and based on artificial but useful definitions of style. The only way of ensuring that the amateur movement escapes from the...

When I was a member of a cine club in the UK (about 35 years ago) it was divided into four film production groups, Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta and a new member was assigned to a unit. So when I joined I found myself a member of Gamma Group. This formed the basis of intra club competition and each g...

Actually I am not a "young" film maker measured in years (I am in my 8th decade) but I am very open to new things and new ways of communication. Yes, I learnt the rules and worked as a professonal for many years. However, the audience has developed a high skill at "reading" films...

Peter, I assume you are well into your 80's to be too old to start again. There is no substitute for taking the camera out and shoorting things to see how they turn out and trying again to get another point of view, different lighting, focal length etc. This is one of the great advantages of tape, y...

Judging, once more!

Could someone explain to me what the criteria are for judging a film other than the judges reaction to the content and the way it is presented? All judging is subjective, full stop, technical skill is importat but not paramount. Remember there are NO RULES, this is an art form not a formalised game....

In the past AMPS has accepted PAL DVDs only. This year we accept miniDV tape, both PAL and NTSC and HDV(tape) in 1080 50i and 60i. We have a multi-standard/multi format tape deck and a HD TV monitor for this year's judging. We also accept DVDs in both SD standards; we are not ready for Blu-Ray or HD...
