Re: How do you learn to make better films?

What I do.. And I learn from watching, analysing and discussing other people’s films. What I should do more of ... I think that, like Ken, I learn most by making films . I learn from experience. I learn from my mistakes and from my successes. There is an argument that producing quantity results in i...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I'd be honoured to have my name as a title for a Howard Smith FACI(M)-elect film! My result through this morning. The judges got it exactly right. 3 stars and marked down for not taking enough risks and unambituious camera angles. I'll happily take that as, being made for a 24hr festival, there was ...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Still waiting here, though I'm not anticipating anything spectacular for my throw away film. I suspect David knows that and is leaving me until last
I had a vague recolection there were very few FACI(M)s. I'm absolutely delighted for you Howard.

Re: Sad news: RIP JOHN ASTIN

A repost of what I have said elsewhere: This is very sad news indeed. I knew John and admired his films since I first attended an NTRIAC in or around 2011. We often talked about the merits of different films we saw at such events. His documentaries are always instantly recognisable, well researched,...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Michael, I don't think anyone here is arguing that big budget = high quality film. The question Tom asked was whether some of the films were truly made for the love of it and without paying the production team - ie in keeping with the spirit of the competition. Now it IS possible that someone spent ...

Budget in excess of $1M? Speaking hypothetically, of course.

Yes to both suggestions.

Tim is a good teacher ... in my stumbling efforts with Movie Studio Platinum a few years ago, he was the person I turned to for help. Gosh, I'd forgtten all about that! Yes, I'd become reasonably proficient at Vegas and was happy to share my knowedge as, at the time, I couldn't understand why more ...

Re: VideoPad

Roy, please rest asssured I am totally aware of the differences in learning power. Nowhere is this more evident than in seeing my own capacity to learn things diminish quite frighteningly over the past 20 years (and as a youngster of 60 I find this very scary).

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

One comment on this film that irritated me was that it “didn’t feel original” when in fact it was a totally original piece of writing by my friend Chris Davies. This is inevitable. Just because something has been written from scratch, that doesn't mean it necessarily feels original. There are only ...

Roy, I think that the Windows 10 Photo edit software is what she's editing on now. But it's incredibly limited. That's the problem. And herein lies the problem. Complexity vs simplicity. I'm not convinced by the "steep learning curve" argument. Imagine a basic requirement. Import some vid...

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

I don't think it matters if entries are down. There are some very good reasons - quite apart from the difficulty in getting groups of people together to make films, I'm sure Ken is not the only person holding back films because they have been developed for and benefit from a live audience What matte...

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

That had never occurred to me Ken - how interesting. My initial thought was that while it makes a difference in how the film plays in an auditorium, it wouldn't make any diffenece to the judging, but that's not entirely true. Even sitting in a hotel room with just three other people (two other judge...

Re: Manifesto for Change

Indeed, Ned, we are makers of amateur films (even I can't claim to be amateur even though some of my output can be considered amateur in every sense of the word). Whilst the details will be hidden in the rules, an "Amateur Film Festival" implies no-one gets paid, whereas "Non-Commerci...
