Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?

Ned, why a separate student section? They are film makers, the same as us, it's just that they hope to be paid film makers eventually. They have no particular advantages, the kit access is meaningless nowadays, and they are a good deal less experienced than us. Tim, you are right, I wouldn't cross t...

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?

Well said Howard, it must be a 'professionally' presented event if it is to attract a wider audience. I do like the social atmosphere of BIAFF and the opportunity of meeting and talking with fellow film makers and that might be slightly diminished if we depart from the current format. Maybe a way co...

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?

Just as Ned says (and me) the films have to be screened in a cinema, preferably with two screens. As I also suggested, why not the NFT, it is National is it not?

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?

Dave, I think that the venue plays a large part in people deciding on festivals. Ned will tell you how wonderful is the setting and venue of Docutah and before that AMPS. The old Ten Best was a form of festival and they used the NFT. I'm sure, with all our influence (?) we could 'borrow' the NFT for...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS

Ned, I find it difficult to answer your question because I often wonder how I have been so lucky with my choice of subjects. It just suddenly occurs to me when talking with someone that there might just be a film appearing here! It doesn't always work out of course but it is just that sudden 'spark'...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS

Willy, yes of course you are too soft. I am amazed at this guy's behaviour and would have grabbed back possession of my film immediately he started taking over. You can always find someone to operate the camera for you surely, maybe your wife or someone in your family? Anyhow, if you back will allow...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS

Absolutely Dave, you have backed up my point. Of course fiction films demand more diverse talents than docs or' impressionistic' films. Howard amazingly, manages all that virtually on his own. My type of productions are, as you know, typical 'one man band' efforts, for good or ill! I well remember O...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS

I absolutely feel the same way as Howard as regards solo film making. I try and craft a film rather as an artist paints a picture. It is in my thoughts 24/7 and I'm constantly forming ideas in my head. When I'm shooting I'm editing at the same time and there's no way I could explain to an editor how...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS

Goodness Howard, I've had worse reviews than that, even for some highly graded films. We mustn't be too sensitive, that's what I tried to explain to the lady who doesn't like competitions. I'm with you on solo film making, I much prefer that mode of operation.

Re: Free editing software

Ned, no, Media 100 would be the best FREE software I believe. It is my editing system for sure, and has been since 1996 when I went digital. The problem has been that Boris eventually bought it and after bringing it up to date with HD,4K etc they stopped further development and it became free (£15,0...

Re: FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS

Don't be surprised Howard, as I've told you before, everyone sees art (film making is art) in different lights. There are films sometimes which gain unanimous approval but it is rare. That is why film makers, including you and I, should not take 'competition' results and grading too seriously. I've ...

Re: Jameela

Tom, I'm totally with you. Although I would be tolerant to those portrait aspect You Tubers, I much prefer the 16:9 (or wider) aspect and I find it difficult to take seriously a film shot in portrait mode. It's so easy to turn your iphone around to get the better aspect and I cannot, for the life of...

Re: Jameela

A film is a film is a film. Does it matter what aspect it is in or how it was shot. It's either good or it's not. Some of these You Tubers do have imagination and they may well graduate to making better films. I've just read through a year's posts on this thread, what did happen to Jameela and where...

Re: Contentious/contemporary subjects

About a year ago I had a piece published in our magazine entitled "Why Do We Make Films?" It is a question that I often consider and the answer as far as I am concerned is two fold. The first reason is to experience artistic satisfaction and the second is to entertain anyone who views the ...
