Re: XLR plugs and connectors

Although we have slightly drifted off the original topic of plugs etc we are still talking mics and sound recording, plus, as promised, I wanted to add the latest bit about the mic bracket which arrived a week or so ago. It cost £54 which I thought a bit pricey, but, if it solves the problem... It i...

Re: XLR plugs and connectors

Thanks again Tim for all the feedback. Yes I have had the hum a few times and especially while messing around with the plugs, cables and mics sorting this issue out. But it does also happen when near electical equipment and in certain environments. I use the mic on camera for all kinds of filming bu...

Re: XLR plugs and connectors

Hi Tim. Thanks for that. Yes that`s the Sennheiser mic I have also. I think you have finally solved this last puzzle. I bought it from someone on these forums so it was second hand. It worked fine except that the on/ off switch and the little LED light didn`t seem to work. But I put a battery in it ...

Re: XLR plugs and connectors

Hi everyone and thanks to one and all for your comments/ advice and ideas. It has all been very puzzling. Like Michael, it appears that I too have plugged and unplugged various mics into the same socket in the hurry of shooting a video and whether they have batteries in them or have not, each have g...

Re: XLR plugs and connectors

Right here is the latest on this one! Thanks to you all for the help. Ned, the link you sent to me was very useful and has proved a solution, albeit with another question...read on. Yes Michael, the previous Sony cameras, Z5s did have XLR sockets and also similar switches to select the mic inputs an...

XLR plugs and connectors

I posted this under another heading but no-one has yet replied. Perhaps it is hidden there or maybe no-one has the answer to it. But here goes again just in case: I have bought a new Sony camera (model HXR NX100) with XLR microphone sockets. I have tried plugging in two different Sony mics from our ...

Re: CONNECTING CABLE

On a similar thread, has anyone here discovered that XLR microphone plugs and connectors are not all the same? I tried one of our new Sony cameras on Saturday and a Sennheiser microphone plugged into either of the XLR input sockets was not working. I tried a Sony mic, supplied with our old Z5 camcor...

Re: From tape to memory card

The "look" of a camera can have positive or negative effects of course. If you have read my article in FVM from a couple of years ago about when we were shooting our comedy/ thriller in Wakefield town centre, "The Contract," you will see what I mean. I was using one of the Z5s as...

Re: From tape to memory card

Thanks everyone for all the comments even though we went a bit off topic at times, but still all very interesting. I thought I should add a few comments of my own to explain some things and fill a couple of gaps. Yes I have now already bought two new Sony cameras. When it became clear back in March ...

From tape to memory card

Hi all. About 3 weeks ago, one of our Sony Z5 cameras seized up at the end of a wedding. I ejected the mini DV tape and the door stayed open and now will not close even though I tried the routine of removing battery/ turning on and off and so on. We had the second Z5 to finish the shoot. So then aft...

Re: BIAFF at Harrogate

Thanks Dave for the link to the "Making of..." for "Where the Guilt Lies." I see now it was the actor`s own decision to wear the hat and trenchcoat. In fact, what the actors wear is always a point discussed amongst us in a Phase 4 Film as it all has an impact on the believabilty ...

Re: BIAFF at Harrogate

We gave a film show to Mercury Movies in Leeds last night and Bob Rowley was there, the maker of the comedy film I mentioned; "Starter, Maincourse and Not so Sweet." He told me he was not inspired by the film "Mrs Doubtfire" as he hadn`t seen it when he wrote the script. Apparent...

BIAFF at Harrogate

Well I am shocked and amazed! (Shocked and amazed of Wakefield writes:) Nothing seems to have been mentiond about BIAFF in Harrogate which concluded 9 days ago. Surely there was plenty to comment on and in past years the forum has been awash with opinions, likes and dislikes, reviews and overviews. ...

Re: BIAFF 2016 - who's entering?

There is always a degree of anxiety when you have a film being screened. Will there be a decent audience to watch it? (If it`s a Saturday as there are several choices of programme). Will it be well received? (Especially if it`s a comedy.) Will it be projected properly without any technical hitches? ...
