Re: Future for clubs -

As Ned writes, film making generally is flourishing, world wide. I attended this week the Open City Documentary Festival organised by London University (UCL) on their 'campus' off the Tottenham Court Road and it has been a raging success. Over four days the place was humming, with five cinemas opera...

Re: 4k video

Or Media 100, they have supported 4K for at least a year. I've watched their webcam on 4K editing.

Re: Borehamwood on the brink ... ?

Lee and I have not always seen eye to eye but I agree with every word of his post. What good sense and advice! The young film makers like to 'do their own thing' and don't take kindly to being lectured, especially in connection to artistic activities like film making. Last year I entered and attende...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Peter, just let them talk to camera and see what you get. I don't find coaching them gets you anywhere. If you can't use the picture then at least you have voice over material. Shoot bags of cut aways (I always forget to do enough) including some long shots of him so you can't see whether it's in sy...

Re: WHAT ARE YOUR YOUTUBE / VIMEO ETC NAMES?

I've got about eight of my early films (16mm FILM) on YouTube. I always find it tricky to find them but manage eventually, they're all in a line. Those were the days when I made short 'impression' cut to music films. I think they're all in the IAC library (Dave?). Editor: type "Michael Slowe&qu...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Willy, we may as well continue our 'private' conversation, if anyone wants to join in they are welcome. I don't think that my 'painter' is any better than yours, in fact your lady is very articulate and I like the way the camera follows her while she speaks. As to length of films we both suffer crit...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

No Willy, I certainly don't agree. I never rehearse my speakers, that destroys all the impression I'm trying to create. I just indicate briefly the sort of things I want them to talk about and let them get on with it. I don't care how long they talk for or how many 'fluffs' there are, it can all be ...

Re: Assembling VOBs and m2ts files

Col, I have been convinced that you're right as far as transmission of files for festivals are concerned. Ripping already encoded DVD's though does seem ridiculous. As you say, doubtless web based streaming in full HD will soon be with us and that will solve that problem. My wife does not reckon on ...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Of course Willy is a foreigner, I bet he doesn't understand the LBW law in cricket, that's my yardstick for foreigners - I married one! Seriously though, the question of making your films understandable in other countries is important for us. I think that if the words are spoken as narration the ans...

Re: Assembling VOBs and m2ts files

Col, I know you're not keen on ProRes as a codec but post houses and broadcasters are very happy with it. The file sizes are way down on uncompressed HD and I save huge amounts of storage space using it, with very little loss of quality. I can bring a 40 GB file back into my edit system (MacPro 2.5 ...

Re: Assembling VOBs and m2ts files

Dave, more and more festivals (and broadcast companies) are asking that films be submitted as files rather than video. The transmission of these files can be a problem, although eventually, this will be done over the ether. Last year I took a drive down to a London festival where they downloaded my ...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Great posts, the explanations are illuminating, we really are getting interllectual involving Schiller, thank you Dave. However, no one has taken me up on my moan that the top prize went to a full blown feature film with a fairly familiar story line rather than to a really deep (intellectual?) wonde...

Re: Titanic Inspired

Brilliant piece of work Desmond, James Cameron did no better! It would be interesting to hear what was 'real' and what wasn't. I imagine the wreck material is genuine, as were of course, the first sequence of stills. One minor carp, the music ends very suddenly both at the change between the stills ...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Perhaps we should really have started a new thread for the BIAFF post mortems to save having to go through three pages but it's a bit late now. I departed the moment the lights came up as I'd taken four hours driving down (Friday!) but was delighted to do it home in just over two. I therefore did no...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Willy, you do sometimes write a lot of rubbish and of course I'll recognise you. Didn't I make a film of you speaking at one BIAFF dinner some years back? Mike, I did say that I meant to mention you, you've either misread my mail or your computer is printing different words than mine! Don't forget t...
