Re: Good quality machines, bad quality films

I'd like to quote from my A4 sheet, 'How to win Film Competitions'.
Item 7: Use some close-ups. Then go closer.

I echo your thoughts about upscalers. Read the post started by Peter Stedman, 'Projectors'.

Re: Audio Gain Control

We seem to have hit a solid, immovable object with this Chris, don't we? I asked on the VX yahoo forum and no-one could help with definitive information, so it sounds as if Sony decided way back in 2005 to disallow full manual audio control. They corrected this with the VX2000, so it might be time t...

Re: Adobe Premiere Elements 7

Elements 4 (which I'm presuming is little different to 7) allows you to simply click a tag when your timeline edit's complete and 'make DVD'. Is there a reason you don't do it this way rather than going out to your DVD recorder, Roy?

Re: PROJECTORS

When I read posts such as Michael's (above) I feel there's life in the ubiquitous standard definition DVD yet. Of course Blu-ray is better and of course broadcasters won't consider anything but HD (unless it's phone-cam video of planes landing on the Hudson), but upscalers and superb projectors have...

Re: Beware the dreaded Energy Saving Lamps!!!

These fluorescent 'energy-saving' lamps won't be around for long though as I'm thinking LED technology will quickly supersede them. LEDs use even less energy (almost zero heat) and can be designed to give all sorts of spread patterns. Dimmable bulbs here: http://www.energybulbs.co.uk/product...0gQgo...

Re: Canon's new HV40

A very good question Billy, and there's nothing to be said but suck-it-and-see. I say this because a recent film competition I judged included an HDV tape that was recorded on a Canon HV20 (or maybe a 10). It wouldn't play back (no sound or picture) in either of my Sony HDV camcorders, though strang...

Re: Avoiding grainy images when filming in poor light

Many modern camcorders are fitted with a ramping zoom (mine included). This means the lens can be a good 2 stops faster at wideangle than at telephoto, so when the light dims, stick to the wideangle end of the zoom and move about. In the above case you might need two 100 watt bulbs to light the room...

Re: Canon's new HV40

You mean that doesn't use tape? Tape is on it's way out but so is analogue TV, doesn't mean it doesn't work perfectly well.

Re: Canon HV30

Just to get some background here Dot. You've been editing DV footage on this pc from another (earlier) camcorder? Successfully using firewire? Then I suggest that if you've shot in the HDV mode in the Canon that you downconvert it to DV (in the HV30's menu) and feed that to the pc down firewire. All...

What's to 'install' Dorothy? Simply connect the camera by Firewire and press play on the HV30.

I found this site and thought it might be useful for all those keen to extend the mic leads and so on.

Re: Best movie tips

Remember variety is the spice of life. Surprise and delight your viewer. Use the dynamic range of the video and audio. Use manual exposure and vary the focal length, pov, filming speed and scene length.
