Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

I've done this, Tom, and didn't think anything of it until it was pointed out by Dave or Jan I think it was as it had never occurred to me that it was wrong. They, if it was they, the judges anyway, said I needn't have put a place name on as it was in the commentary. Again, it was done without think...

Re: Club Films on Youtube

Thanks for all comments which have been helpful. Our Portas film does at least seem to support the bid rather more than some of the others that I've looked at. The reason for the addition of 'amateur' like that was in case the judges thought a Sennheiser microphone, even if not held as intended, dee...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Sorry to misquote you, Tom. Agreed there is a difference, and we also have a different understanding over the meaning of 'entertain'. My dictionaries start the definition with 'amuse', but one does say 'occupy agreeably', not, I would have said, the prime purpose of a documentary, which could be abo...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Hope you all have a good time! Willy said - I remember an Italian one about puppets on a string, but ... I myself preferred a feature film at that festival. I've just been attempting to copy that BIAFF SVHS tape to DVD. Don't know why as the photocopy of the FVM page says it's on Mini DV and DVD but...

Club Films on Youtube

As it was the required method of entry, Pendle's short film in support of the local authority's application for Portas High Street Project funding (Google Nelson's Portas Pilot Project if you want to see it), one of our members did it for the club and the result was far better than the few examples ...

Re: IAC library movies

Pendle's experience of BIAFF compilations is different but the result much the same as Colin's.

They have seldom moved us as we would have hoped.

No, Tim, certainly not giving up yet!
Thanks for comments and I'm sure there's a lot in what you say about email.

Re: Changing your club name

Pendle changed from Pendle Film Society to Pendle Movie Makers in 1985. (My email spell-checker doesn't like Movie). I remember a long argument about it but that is not reflected in the minute made at the time. We had had a brief spell as Film & Video Society but that was short-lived. I am not a...

Re: Mitsubishi HC 4000 lamp

Your offer to let me know the settings you have found good is most acceptable, Colin, and there is no hurry. I think you have my email address if you want to use that but of course it would be of interest to others so I will check this forum to see what you say if not. Gordon Sharp at Spellbound als...

Mitsubishi HC 4000 lamp

Pendle Movie Makers brand new 4000 shows uneven illumination, the right side being less bright than the left. Mitsubishi say this will right itself with use probably by 50 hours, certainly by 100 hours and the man I spoke to likened it to expecting brakes to take time to bed in after a change of dis...

Re: Club Competition

It seems a shame no one has responded to this post although there have been a lot of views. It would seem to be a good idea for a club to get an idea who was most imaginative in the editing. Probably needs fertile mind to take the shots in the first place. I'll put it to the club. Peter. PS this wil...

I would take serious issue with Dave on this point if indeed he thinks this but I doubt that very much.

No, he wouldn't have realised the background sound of the bakery was so great. Conversation was shouting mouth to ear, that's why I didn't record the oldest employee.

Re: When are documentaries not movies?

Thanks for all contributions which have been very interesting. I have a film to make about a textile mill. If I left the sound at the original level audiences would need ear plugs. I suppose I shall have to 'cheat' but I think I'll tell the audience that I've done so. When I haven't on another film ...

Re: When are documentaries not movies?

Peter, are you implying that the use of the library or specially constructed shots made the film less instructive or interesting? If so I disagree - in fact I believe the reverse is true. Absolutely not; just that the justification for the use of a specially constructed shot was that it made a docu...

When are documentaries not movies?

It appears that the great David Attenborough, among others, wishes to redefine 'documentary' when he said that the inclusion of what, in another context, might have been called a 'library' shot or even a 'laboratory sequence', was justified because he was making a 'movie'. His supporters are right i...
