Re: IAC Website
Martin, the magazine that you refer to, Moviemaker, was the successor to Movie Maker which in the 60s and 70s was published by Fountain Press and edited by Tony Rose and Alan Cleave. It was the mainstay of non commercial film making and promoted and ran the wonderful competition called the Ten Best....

Re: IAC Website
An on line mag would be the end of the IAC as far as I am concerned.

Re: Burlesque
I totally agree that some of the modern editing systems do rather 'over egg' the process. When we edited on film, as I did in both 8mm and 16mm for over ten years, straight cuts and the occasional mix or fade, was all we needed. The range of digital tricks available today is mind blowing but, in my ...

Re: Festivals time limits
Dave, I'm not so sure that there would be no objection to a film made, say, fifty years ago, especially if it had a wide circulation and even been entered in a previous long ago IAC competition.

Re: Is electronic communication a young persons thing?
Ned, you have put your finger on my problem. Getting your films actually seen is now much more difficult, apart of course, from the Vimeo, You Tube etc.

Re: Is electronic communication a young persons thing?
Strange certainly, and something I find difficult to manage. E Mails are a great benefit because if you can't phone someone you know they'll see your message. Text also is good, but the FaceBooks, Twitter etc etc are not for me. As to the film festivals, I only enter those that plan a screening, oth...

Re: Touting for films
I get two or three of these mails daily. It followed my success in various festivals with my film Danny's Red Box. Some mails are quite persuasive and offer various inducements by way of discounts and if the festival sounds reasonably prominent I do enter the film. They are however, as has been sugg...

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals
John, I think that the funding of fictional films does illustrate the difference between amateur and professional productions, but documentaries need not be expensive. We can compete with the professionals provided that the subject is interesting enough.

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals
Ned, the Docutah site looks amazing. How can one see some of the films, they look really interesting?

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals
Dave, in answer to your question "very little if any". Laurels are meaningless because they are not worth adding to a film if it's already "printed" and circulated. Attending a screening is very worthwhile if firstly, one has a film selected and secondly, if the event is in the UK.

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals
Thanks Dave for this info.
Can I ask Ned, who is hopefully still 'listening', when is the next Docutah and what are the entry details?

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals
This thread is highly relevant to me as I do enter some festivals if I consider that there may be an opportunity to attend a screening. I am sure that Ned is correct in saying that these are money making events, if not quite a 'scam'. I have noticed that lately they have been offering discounts from...

Re: Lip Synch
Not so bulky was the wonderful Uher tape recorder, that was what I used for sync sound in the 1970s. Crystal sync with my 16mm Beauliui (never could learn to spell it!) so no physical connection. I had the tape audio transferred to mag film by a friendly Soho post production house, those were indeed...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?
There you are Howard, you illustrate perfectly just how a different group of people might view virtually the same film in a completely different way. An award of x stars does not stamp that film with a rating for ever, it is merely the opinion of a tiny group after one or two viewings. I have seen r...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?
Tim, I totally agree with you, the current star system works well enough and tinkering with it would create even more problems than we we seem to have already. I really cannot understand this obsession with ratings. As we all seem to agree and frequently repeat, film viewing is subjective and rarely...
