I have been using Macs for editing for about 12 years now starting with EditDV and then when it began to die off moving over to Final Cut Pro. I would recommend that anyone changing/upgrading should consider a current Mac for editing. Macs come with iMovie and iDVD as standard and for a small invest...

Two films I have made over 30 minutes in length have both beem criticised by judges for "needing trimming". One reason I admire the BIAFF is that it does have the courage to accept films of any length, unusual now in the world of n-c film contests. I have noticed that audiences made up of ...

An interesting post. Future historians will have little more than passing interest in our dramas but the family films will be a mine of information. The problem now is that fewer people write letters and keep journals, the written word is fading into texting, telephone calls and e-mails which seldom...

AVCHD is now editable in a number of editing programs. Final Cut Express 4 and Final Cut Pro 6 will handle AVCHD as well as the regular CoDecs and will also handle mixed formats on the timeline. This is also true of Vegas 8 and the latest version of Vegas Platinum. I am sure the other major players ...

I'm sure that is how old Willy feels and his films suggest that he operates at that energy level.

Merry Christmass and a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful New Year to all who read the forum.

From Ned C, there is a 26 year old looking out from this wreckage.

I wonder if the situation in the Newcastle club is representative of club experience in the UK? Obviously you all do an excellent job and I learnt from your earlier posts about some of the methods used to keep your club alive and well. Unfortunately here in the USA a number of clubs have closed thei...

Institute - an archaic word that better defines a body approving professional qualifications than a group of film/video makers. Amateur - marginally better than "home movie maker" I suppose but see my earlier post for the modern definition. This is not about being PC but acknowledging that...

What are n-c films? You don't mean films you make Ned? Hadn't thought of that before but a good idea, actually it stands for "non-commercial" films/videos. We prefer it to "amateur" as this has been redefined by the film/TV industry (and most other industries) to mean inferior, ...

Just a note that age is just numbers and does not necessarily dictate a style of film making. Of course the audience should be intrigued; baffled; amazed; lost. We are NOT making films for a financial return like the formulaic block busters Hollywood turns out, I sort of hope we are making films wit...

Real artists do art to please themselves and not an audience; there is no client just an urgent creative drive. The problem for film/video is that it is so expensive that raising money from sources other than Governments or Foundations results in an expectation of a financial or a propaganda return....

I know this is "off topic" but the point has been raised. As non-commercial film makers we don't actually have to please an audience; we just have to please ourselves. I believe this desire to please an audience is why so many "anglo-saxon" films are so unadventurous. Carefully d...

Here in the USA we can purchase small three wheeled dollies for moving furniture etc. They are inexpensive ($10 to $20) and very strong. We have used then as dollies with the camera mounted and the "track" made of a plank supported on two short fold out ladders, carefully push the "do...

I am deep into editing the African adventure and have become increasingly aware of two things. First, having spent 40 years shooting 4:3 on film and video I have a hard time composing for the 16:9 aspect ratio. Great for landscapes and "horizontal" events but a bit of pain with people in c...

Thanks, Tom. I read your recent article with info on the minidisc which seems to be slowly vanishing here in the USA. I now use a recorder that records to SDHC cards as .wav files. This is the ZoomH2, works well.
