Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Howard has mentally prepared himself for a clutch of '3 star' films next year.......he will thus avoid the bitter disappointment of missing out on either the '4' or '5 star' categories. The problem with an expectation of '3 star' films is that they are closer to '2 stars' than they are to '5 stars'!...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

The technical standard of the films has definitely risen to a higher level. The result of this improvement is to expose 'storylines' within Drama films, and 'familiarity' in some of the Documentaries. The Projector struggled in the 85% darkened room and lost the essential vibrancy of the black out.....

Re: CAMERA SLIDERS

Yes I can testify that the RODE MICRO MIC is great value for money...it is very small, well made, and comes with a shock mount and furry pussy. It is particularly brilliant with my GH4 Microfourthirds still camera. (This Camera incidentally its astonishingly versatile for movie making). The Gh4's ac...

Re: BIAFF at Harrogate

The Cropping factor which was noticeable on a few of the films was, in fact, present on all of the films which were channelled through the Huddersfield Black Optoma projector on the Sunday. The Optoma, like many other projectors, allows for a small amount of cropping to remove the dotted line which ...

Re: CAMERA SLIDERS

I have also mounted a Manfrotto 701 hdv 'head' on my Glidetrack which means you can both rotate AND shift angle gently up and down while sliding.

The 701 Manfrott HDV head is a great light to medium pan and tilt head.....and not too bulky.

Re: CAMERA SLIDERS

My slider is a Glidetrack......it is 2foot which is quite long enough and portable. It take the camera about 6 to 8 seconds traverse it's length. Unfortunately they have changed the design and i am unwilling to testify as to how well it works! The Glidedetrack is about £220 some are much more expens...

Re: The Revenant

Rather a late response, Michael, but I too saw REVENANT! It was magnificent in so many ways, but it was relentlessly BLEAK and I felt as drained and leaden as the ice-cold monochrome landscape when I emerged from the Cinema. There were some fantastic scenes....and as you suggest the opening was a ma...

Re: BIAFF 2016 - WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR RESULTS?

Well....poor 'BLUE' has hit the glass ceiling of the 4 star category and will rise no more! It is always deflating to take a knock back....after the triumph of WRITER's BLOCK last year. The film is to be shown on the Sunday which is important to me as it is good to see or appraise an audience reacti...

Re: BIAFF 2016 - who's entering?

I have just completed judging the LEEDS Audio Visual annual Trophy....and without giving anything way at all, as the Award is not yet announced...I believe I can say that the level of sound recording, particularly in narration, was very high indeed. This is achieved by using small insulated 'sound b...

I don't want to disappoint you Tim....but Maria and Paula are one and the same Girl!

Meanwhile, I hope to be seated at the same table as Michael Slowe in Harrogate in the hope that some of his cinematic glister will enhance my modest entry.

Howard...a kind of 'spread betting' .....

The problem with Six entries is the prospect of being offended half a dozen times in the Judge's reviews!

Happy New Year.....to you all on the Forum....or at the Forum; This will be the year of the New Computer.....there is of course nothing wrong with the old one .... except for the new FCPX editing software which will not function with it. I have an entry ... it is already 'entered' ... Is it too long...

Re: Are Film Competitons a Lottery?

Jill, I believe we enter competitions to reinforce our perception of where we, as individuals, rank in the hierarchy of our film making peers whether it be Club Level or the more prestigious BIAFF. The RESULT defines our talent which is why we are all so defensive when we believe that our Master Wor...
