Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

First can I echo what has been said already here about Tom`s excellent advice on catching the judges` eye and his insight into his judging methods. Perhaps you could send this on to be published in FVM? I agree that films in competition, watched at a festival, can seem very different to showing it t...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

It`s a nice theory Dave that as a regular film maker this is the reason I have not been asked to judge. However, Howard Smith tells me that he has judged for the past 5 years and Howard seems to enter many films into BIAFF every year. 7 films this year I believe? He is not the only one who enters th...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Hi Dave and thanks for your confirmation of how the earlier round is judged at BIAFF on TVs. When people were messaging me and telling me this, initially I didn`t believe it. I would have thought that IAC resources could muster up 5 projectors and some kind of amplifier system. I have been a judge f...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Well here is what happened to us. This time we had 3 new films which were sent to BIAFF. It is a good guide (or should be) to judge our own films against our own previous ones. Yes standards change over the years but they do for everyone and we should all be moving upwards together. Our 3 films were...

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Here`s the answer! Screw an old rotating type plate from a microwave to the back of a standard 16:9 TV. Fix this (securely) to the wall. Make sure it is very safe!!! When watching "normal TV" use as we do now. When watching phone footage shot in the upright position, rotate the TV to a 9:1...

Re: Nominations for the awards

Hello guys. Thanks for the extra information/ explanations on the judging. I do realise that it will be a massive job sorting it all out. We did it for our competition 5 times, though of course, on a much smaller scale. I wouldn`t want to add extra burdens to the work David Newman does, I just thoug...

Nominations for the awards

I seem to remember that a few years ago we had discussions on the forum about learning of the top nominations for the various awards. I don`t know what happened to that thread, though clearly it was not implemented. As today will be the Oscars in Hollywood where the nominees are announced in each ca...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2019

It seems that the whole thing is shrouded in mystery. The new issue has just arrived and tells us that there will be an interim arrangement while a new editor is found. It says that all the regular contributors are to continue. Slightly presumptuous as no-one has actually asked me.

Re: Battery Recommendations

Hi Tim. My cameras are all Sony ones and use the same NP-F batteries. Apart from the genuine Sony ones I have had some called "Masione" bought on Amazon and so far these have worked very well and seem no different apart from being cheaper.

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2019

Whilst I guess that Cathy`s intention was possibly not to create a heated debate or even a mildly warm one (!) finally the forum has some serious issues to debate, in other words, the future of FVM. As many people will know from my articles, I am not an equipment freak by any means and only buy a ne...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2019

I don`t know whether I have met you Cathy? We have been to all but one of the BIAFF/ IAC Movie weekends over the past 25 years, so we may have done if you have attended. I read your comments with interest and agree with Michael that there are some relevant points here but I feel they are made rather...

Happy Christmas

Hi All; There was a time when this forum would be buzzing with news, interesting topics and various (sometimes heated) discussions. Christmas time would bring a spate of good wishes and greetings as well as updates on what we are all up to, film wise and generally. But sadly this all seems to be in ...

Re: FVM Editor

I have had an e-mail today from Garth (sent to several of the regular contributors to FVM) to say he will be informed soon what the new arrangements will be. No-one seems to know much more so watch this space.

Re: FVM Editor

Thanks Tom for that. It seems a sad fact of modern life that people are quick to criticise anything but slow to praise. I have had a couple of odd e-mails here asking where someone`s FVM is as though I am somehow involved. I don`t know why they didn`t ask Garth directly, but I messaged him on their ...

Re: FVM Editor

Thank goodness for Tim and Tom`s replies! I thought everyone was asleep out there. It seem no-one is saying anything at all. Obviously things must be going on behind the scenes, but what? I know when Liz Donlan finished with it there was uncertainty about who could carry it on and if the magazine wo...
