Re: Judging-FVM June

One of the hardest things for any film maker to accept is that there is not necessarily a correlation between how hard they worked to make it and how well the film succeeds. Something of that sort is behind the "kill your darlings" advice so often give. Long ago, Ken Wilson taught me, that...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

I am very happy to see Albert back on the forum ... these 90-year-old youngsters have a lot to say. Ned, thanks for the thanks. I will make sure the word gets back to the people mainly responsible: Jill Bunting and John Smith (on main controls), Martin Evans (on click control in the cinema), Ian Ben...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

I wonder if it may be time to revert to the older system of awards at BIAFF: gold, silver, bronze and blue seals. (These were certificates which had a large foil seal of the appropriate colour attached.) In fact I might suggest losing the blue level. The seal system was changed partly because we ran...

Re: BIAFF on ZOOM

I strongly second Ken. The online sessions give us a chance to see many films we might otherwise not come across. Some are brilliant, some are of the level that I might just - in my dreams - aspire to. There is time for a bit of banter between the audience members and to complain about the judges (o...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

As one who had been a BIAFF (and LIAFF)) judge for many years ... but sat this one out ... I do think you always need to take a week to cool down and then re-read comments. After that, by all means let the organisers know if you think a judgement is badly wrong. As for whether your film/s should be ...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is amazing - and watching the "Making Of" featurettes roused my admiration ... but it is not the original story and he marries it with the rise of fascism ... too much for my taste. As for old fine artists - some had mush of the grunt work done by apprentices...

Re: 35mm slide scanners

The Plustek range give very good quality, but they start at around 250 pounds. I have tried a few cheap systems, but the results are usually poor.

It will help if your friend has a good image editing program to adjust colours and crop pictures.

Re: UNICA 2023 in Comacchio, Italy

My third visit to a UNICA festival had a significant influence on my life. It took place in the Music School: Conservatoire de la ville de Luxembourg on the outskirts of the city. There were two video projectors, both more powerful than any I had hitherto seen. During the World Minute Movie Cup, th...

Re: Free Royalty Free Music

I suspect that is because most of the "free music" is intended as mood music - to create or enhance the atmosphere of a scene - whereas most classical composers were writing for an audience that was focused only on the music.

Re: UNICA 2023 in Comacchio, Italy

My second UNICA was the following year, in Tallinn, Estonia. The journey was fun. We flew to Stockholm via Copenhagen. Our hotel was the one used for Nobel dignitaries and winners - too expensive to eat in but very comfortable, We had a day to explore the city before catching an evening ferry to Hel...

UNICA 2023 in Comacchio, Italy

Readers of the forum will know the name: UNICA. (It stands for Union Internationale du Cinéma d'Auteur'. The last letter used to stand for "amateur", but many countries have the same arguments about that word as we do in the UK. The idea now is that "auteur" - author - implies a ...
